Section Mounting the DVR and Installing a Hard Drive Before you connect devices to the DVR, you must mount the unit on the wall. Begin by grounding the DVR to protect the unit from electrostatic discharge and to prevent personal injury. The DVR must be properly grounded at all times during the installation.

Mounting the DVR and Installing a Hard Drive To connect a ground wire Locate the ground stud at the bottom of the DVR, near the power cord connector. Prepare an earth ground wire of appropriate length using a proper ground wire and a solderless ring connector.
3108 DVR Installation Guide Removing or Replacing the Front Cover You can remove a grounded DVR’s front cover to access the components required to mount the DVR. After you connect devices to the DVR, apply power, and access the unit for the first time, you can replace the front cover.

Mounting the DVR and Installing a Hard Drive To replace the front cover Orient the front cover so the vents are at the bottom. Place the slots at the top edge of the front cover over the tabs at the top of the enclosure. Swing the bottom of the front panel into place.
3108 DVR Installation Guide Removing the Hard Drive Mounting Bracket After you remove the DVR front cover, remove the hard drive mounting bracket so you can access the upper mounting holes, which you use to secure the DVR to the wall.
Mounting the DVR and Installing a Hard Drive Marking the DVR Location Before you mount the DVR, locate the wall stud upon which you want to mount the unit. Then, using the DVR as a template, mark the appropriate mounting hole locations. Mark two or four mounting hole locations, depending on the mounting method you want to use.

You MUST mount the DVR on a wall stud when you use the centerline mounting method.

Mounting the DVR and Installing a Hard Drive Trace the rear access cutout onto the wall. Remove the DVR from the mounting screw, and place it aside. 3108 DVR Installation Guide • If the lower mounting location is in a wall stud, thread the screw directly into the wall stud. • If the lower mounting location is in drywall, first install a drywall anchor, and then thread the screw into the drywall anchor.
The DVR is shipped without a hard drive. Without a hard drive, you can view live audio, video, and alarm events, but the DVR does not store this data. The DVR supports standard ATA hard drives. For a list of recommended hard drives, contact your March Networks Customer Care representative.

3108 DVR Installation Guide WARNING! Before you install a hard drive in the DVR, power down the DVR and move the power switch on the auxiliary I/O panel to the OFF position. After the health and status LEDs turn off, remove the power cord from the DVR.
DVR captures audio, video, and alarm events from connected devices. For more information, see the publications included on your March Networks software CD or the application’s online help. Depending on the device, wiring and cabling requirements may vary. For more information, see the documentation accompanying the device.
When you configure the video cameras, the video inputs closest to the front correspond to Camera Group 1 in the March Networks software. The video inputs closest to the back correspond to Camera Group 2.

Making DVR Connections Connecting a Video Output Device You can connect a video output device (such as a video monitor) to the video output on the I/O panel to show live video on the device. You can use the video output device to monitor video cameras. A video output device can also be used in applications where point-of-presence monitoring is required.
3108 DVR Installation Guide Connecting Audio Input and Output Devices The DVR supports line level audio and supplies audio power options that may be used for appropriate audio input and output devices. You can connect appropriate audio input and output devices to the terminal blocks on the I/O panel to capture live audio from the DVR or to participate in two-way communication with individuals near the DVR.
Making DVR Connections Connecting Alarm Sensor Devices You can connect up to four alarm sensor devices to the terminal blocks on the I/O panel. The unit supports dry contact devices, such as motion detectors and door contacts. To allow the DVR to detect tampering with the alarm device (such as someone cutting the line), install a 200 ohm resistor across the terminals of the alarm sensor device.
When a switch device is connected to the DVR, the device can be switched on or off using the software applications included on your March Networks software CD. You can also program the DVR to turn the device on or off when an alarm event occurs. For more information, see the publications included on your March Networks software CD or the application’s online help.

Specialized hardware, called a TVC-2100, acts as an interface between the DVR and an ATM connected to the TVC-2100. To connect an ATM to the DVR, you must use the March Networks ATM Interface Kit. For more information, contact your March Networks sales representative.

If a device controller is connected to the COM port of the computer running the March Networks administration and configuration software applications, the data interface is extended to the DVR dataports so the passthrough device can be controlled using the device controller.

3108 DVR Installation Guide Connecting to the Network You can connect the DVR to the network using a CAT5 Ethernet cable. When you connect the DVR to the network and apply power, the DVR can automatically negotiate a 10/100 BaseT network link.
Making DVR Connections Connecting a USB Modem You can connect a USB modem to the I/O panel with a USB cable if you want to access the DVR over a dial-up connection. This is useful if you are working with a DVR installed in a location that does not have a network, but has a telephone line.
Section Powering the DVR After you mount the DVR and connect all devices, you can connect the DVR to a UPS and apply power. The UPS, which provides backup power in the event of a power failure, must be specified for a 60 watt load.
After the general settings are configured, use the administration and configuration software applications included on your March Networks software CD to connect to the DVR to specify advanced configurations. For example, configure how video is captured and recorded, or specify how the DVR responds to alarm events.
March Networks software CD to ensure the DVR is operating properly. For example, you can check the status summary to view a summary of the storage capacity and status of the DVR and connected devices, search the DVR problem report database for reported problems, or upgrade the DVR.

Maintaining and Servicing the DVR To replace a fuse Power down the DVR by moving the power switch on the auxiliary I/O panel to the OFF position (move the power switch to the down position). The DVR performs a graceful shutdown, which may take several minutes. The power down sequence is complete when the health and status LEDs turn off.
Section Reference: Working With Removable Terminal Blocks The DVR comes with three removable 20-pin terminal blocks that are used to connect various devices to the DVR, such as alarm sensor devices, dataport devices, and switch devices. We recommend you connect wires to the appropriate terminals before you connect the terminal blocks to the I/O panel or auxiliary I/O panel.

A device that digitally records and stores media and alarm information. DVR Administrator An individual or team responsible for defining the behavior of the DVR and maintaining the DVR.
