FSMA (Field Installable Subminiature Assembly)
This fibre optic connector is one of the few connectors internationally standardized. The
norm is described in IEC-SC 86B(CO)20. The first FSMA connector was a screw drive
connector with the fibre in a metallic sleeve. The diameter of the sleeve is 3.175 mm and the
contact area is rubbed plane.
IEEE802.3
This working committee consists of several groups, deals with all items concerning the
Ethernet, e.g. Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, 10 Gigabit Ethernet and Ethernet in the first
mile (EFM), the interfaces, transmission media, Switching.
IRL (Inter Repeater Link)
The Inter Repeater Link provides a bi-directional connection (link segment) on the physical
layer. This link may be realized as a metallic wire (e.g. for 10Base-T and to connect larger
distances via means of optical transmission).
Separation
Modern repeaters have a self-test function that allows them to identify faulty signals from one
of the segments connected (e.g. due to short-circuit). This leads to an automatic partitioning
of the faulty network segment to prevent that its malfunction affects the whole data network.
As soon as the malfunction is eliminated, the port is automatically reinstated.
Signal regeneration
As a repeater works on the physical layer, only bit-serial data streams are received and
emitted. A repeater cannot "check" the content of the data it transmits; it only regenerates
and retimes the data signal received and restores the preamble, which synchronizes the
receiver to the transmitter element signal timing, to the necessary length.
STP (Shielded Twisted Pair)
The STP cable is a symmetric cable with cores stranded and shielded in pairs. The shield
for the core pairs is a foil screen consisting of a polyester foil coated with aluminium. The
shield for the cable is a braided shield.
Twisted Pair (TP)
A twisted pair cable is a symmetric copper cable with the cores twisted in pairs.
