trimming the PucK Of cOffee POwDer

the »Design coffee Grinder Advanced Plus« comes with the special razor™ tool
for trimming the surface of the coffee grind within the filter basket of your espresso
machine. use the razor™ tool, for getting a level, smooth surface of exactly the
correct height, thus achieving consistent extraction results.
changing the Blade
ensure that the appropriate razor™ tool blade with the correct width is installed.
the blade must match the diameter of your filter basket: 58 mm (dark-grey), 54 mm
(light-grey), or 50 mm (medium-grey). on delivery, the 58 mm and 54 mm blades
are already fitted at opposite sides. the 50 mm blade is separate. You will find the
50 mm blade attached to the cover of the grind tray (see: ›Knowing Your »Design
coffee Grinder Advanced Plus«‹).
to get access to the razor™ tool and the third blade, separate the cover and base
of the grind tray.
imPOrtant:
You cannot exchange the dark-grey 58mm-blade.
If you require the 50mm blade, turn the
adjustment dial past #1 until the 54mm blade

is fully extended and able to be pulled from
the body.
1. turn the adjustment dial in the centre of the razor™ tool body until the already
mounted light blade is fully extended and you can pull it out easily.
nOte:
the adjustment dial may feel tight as you continue to wind it towards the end of
its travel.
2. Pull the blade from the razor™ tool body and insert the required blade. then
turn the adjustment dial to retract the blade until the number on the blade is no
longer visible.
3. Press both blades simultaneously into the razor™ tool body until a "click" sound
can be heard. turn the adjustment dial to the desired setting. the razor™ tool
is now ready for use.

It is good advice to store the surplus blade in the grind tray.
If you require the 50mm blade, turn the

After filling the filter basket of your espresso machine with freshly ground coffee and
tamping the coffee power within the filter basket to an evenly pressed puck, use the
razor™ tool to trim the surface of the coffee puck to get a smooth surface with the

correct height.
1. turn the adjustment dial to adjust the razor™ tool to the required setting. see
the table below as a starting point for the correct height of the coffee puck, when
using a Gastroback espresso Machine. see also: ›Adjusting the razor™ tool‹.

2. Place the razor™ tool onto the filter basket. the rim of the razor™ tool must
rest on the rim of the filter basket, with the blade of the razor™ tool penetrating
the surface of the tamped coffee.
3. to scrape off any excess coffee, rotate the razor™ tool back and forth while
