Assemble the Planetary
Spider and Gearing
Assembly
NOTE : If the original planetary pinions are used,
verify that the gear bores (11) for damage. Do not
reuse pinions with bore surface damage.
1. Inspect planet pinion bores (11) for damage. Do
not reuse pinions with bore surface damage.
2. Apply gear lubricant to the planetary pinion bores
and to the pinion shaft (10) journals and shoulder
surfaces.
3. Place the planetary spider (8) on a work bench
with the flange end facing DOWNWARD.
4. Carefully slide planetary spider over the edge of
the work bench just far enough to reach inside to
place a planetary pinion (11) and thrust washer
(12).
5. Install the planetary pinion (11) and thrust washer
(12) from the large end of the planetary spider (8).
The thrust washer tangs of the thrust washer (12)
must engage the slot in the planetary spider inner
support boss.
6. Insert the pinion shafts (10). Hand tighten them to
the supprot journals. The large end of each pinion
shaft must face OUTWARD.
7. Temporarily place the spider cover (3) over the
ends of the pinion shafts (10) to verify that the flats
on the pinion shafts are aligned with the cover
pilot.
NOTE : The tang of the thrust washer (12) must be
engaged in the spider slot. The spider cover (3) must
fit over the pinion shaft flats.
8. Press the pinion shafts (10) into the spider (8) until
the pinion shaft inner shoulders bottom on the
thrust washers (12).

When you apply some silicone gasket materials,
small amounts of acid vapor are present. To
prevent possible serious injury, the work area
must be well-ventilated. If the silicone gasket
material gets into your eyes, flush them with water
for 15 minutes. Have your eyes checked by a
doctor as soon as possible.
9. Install the O-ring (23) at the base of the wheel hub
flange (24).
10. Apply liquid gasket material on the wheel hub O-
ring (23) and the adjacent area.
11. Install the planetary ring gear (17) onto the ring
gear hub (20).
Install the Planetary Spider
Assembly
1. Install the planetary spider and gearing assembly
onto the wheel hub (24). For correct installation,
the planetary pinions (11) must engage both the
sun gear (14) and the ring gear (17) before
installation.
2. Install the slotted head screws (9) that temporarily
clamp the planetary spider (8) to the wheel hub
(24). Hand tighten the screws. Seat the head of
each screw below the surface of the spider flange.
3. Press the new axle shaft thrust button (6) into the
spider cover (3). Apply liquid gasket material to the
thrust button shaft and shoulder area before
pressing the thrust button shaft into the cover.
4. Apply a bead of liquid gasket material to the spider
cover face (3).
5. Install the spider cover (3) onto the planetary
spider (8) with the cover pilot over the pinion shaft
end flats.
6. Install the cover mounting capscrews (4) and
wahers (5). Tighten the capscrews to 35-50 lb•ft
(48-68 N•m).
7. Install the brake drum (1) over the wheel studs
(26) until the drum seats onto the planetary spider
flange (8).
