CHECKING BATTERY SPECIFIC GRAVITY

Use a hydrometer to check the battery specific
gravity.

CHECKING GRAVITY
A. Hydrometer
B. Battery
NOTE: Do not take readings immediately after
adding distilled water, if the water and acid are not
thoroughly mixed, the reading may not be
accurate.
Check the hydrometer readings against this chart.

NOTE: If the readings are taken when the battery
electrolyte is any temperature other than 80°F
(27°C), the reading must be temperature
corrected.
To find the corrected specific gravity reading
when the temperature of the battery electrolyte is
other than 80°F (27°): Add (+) to the specific
gravity reading 0.004 (4 points), for each 10°F
(6°C) above 80° (27°C).
Subtract (-) from the specific reading 0.004 (4
points), for each 10°F (6°C) below 80°F (27°C).
