Overview

The HP E1663A SONET/SDH Electrical Interface is a member of the HP Broad-
band Series of modular VXI-based B-ISDN test instruments. The HP E1663A acts
as the interface between the HP Broadband Series Test System and the System
Under Test, transmitting and receiving 155.52 Mb/s or 52 Mb/s SONET/SDH trans-
mission signals.
The HP E1663A is used in conjunction with the HP E1697A 155 Mb/s Optical Line
Interface or the HP E1617A 52 Mb/s Optical Line Interface, and communication
between the modules is by SMA to SMB Radio Frequency (RF) adaptor cables.
See "Connecting to an Optical Line Interface", page 2-4.
The Electrical Interface provides signal encoding at the appropriate levels and
format required by the System Under Test. Data is transmitted in the binary CMI
(Coded Mark Inversion) format at 155.52 Mb/s or 52 Mb/s.
The data stream received from the System Under Test is CMI at 155.52 Mb/s or 52
Mb/s. The clock is recovered from the incoming data, and automatic compensation
for cable loss and signal loss is provided.
Module Identification
An identification label is attached to the Electrical Interface clamshell enclosure.
The serial number is in the form "0000U00000'". It is in two parts: the first four
digits and the letter are the serial prefix, and the last five digits are the suffix. The
prefix is the same for all identical modules and changes only when a change is
made to the module. The suffix, however, is assigned sequentially and is unique to
each module. The contents of this manual apply to instruments with the serial
prefix(es) listed under SERIAL NUMBERS on the title page.
