Unlike more basic switches, those operators are not all confined to the location of the switch. Thanks to in-built circuitry, two of the operators can be placed up to 200m away (requiring additional receiver units) and one port is accessible from almost anywhere worldwide, thanks to a self-contained IP section.

  • Page 6: Installation

Installation This chapter covers the physical mounting and connection of the SmartView World. Mounting The initial step is to mount the SmartView World in an optimum position, where: • It is in close proximity to the various computer systems that will be connected to it.
  • Page 7: Computer Port Connections

1 Ensure that power is disconnected from the SmartView World and all systems to be connected. (Note: If it is not possible to switch off a system prior to connection, then a ‘Hot plug’ procedure is available – see the restoration section for more details).
  • Page 8: Extended User Port Connections

Extended user port connections Of the three user ports at the rear of the SmartView World, two of these (ports 1 and 3) offer an additional ability to extend the distance between the SmartView World and the keyboard, video monitor and mouse up to 200m. For this purpose, ports 1 and 3 feature additional RJ45 connectors of the type used for standard Ethernet twisted pair cabling.

‘daisy-chain’ arrangement to the first power switch. Each power switch box is then given a unique address and access to each power port (8 ports on each power switch box) is gained using a combination of the switch box address and the port number.
  • Page 11 Connect the other end to the socket marked ‘POWER CONTROL’ on the SmartView World. 3 For each of the remaining switch boxes (if used), use a serial cable with RJ9 connectors at both ends (see Appendix 4 for specification).
  • Page 12: Cascade Connections

Cascade connections The SmartView World supports up to sixteen directly connected computer systems, however, this is by no means the limit of its capabilities. Thanks to an intelligent communication system, many more computers can be controlled by connecting other KVM switches to the SmartView World.
  • Page 13: How Cascade Connections Operate

For instance, a group of four links connected to computer ports 1, 2, 3 and 4 of a switch would always be known as 41, the next group of four connected to ports 5, 6, 7 and 8 would always carry the number 42, and so on. The same is also true for two and three link groups which have their own specific numbers.
  • Page 14: Addressing Computers In A Cascade

While the SmartView World has four user ports, one of those is a dedicated IP port that cannot be fed to a switch above (i.e. it can feed a maximum of three cascade links upwards). For this reason, the natural position for the SmartView World is as the master unit with other switch types, most suitably the Adder SmartView XPro units, feeding up into it.
  • Page 15: Using Cascaded Computers

    • If SmartView Pro switches are used, ensure that they are situated at the lowest level, with no SmartView World or XPro switches below them. • Link groups of twos, threes and fours may be mixed on one switch providing each size of group lies within the appropriate port boundaries designated in Group numbering diagrams.

Slave End connector linked to the receive pin of the Master End connector. To do so would cause the Slave unit to be able to switch the Master unit. This would setup an endless cyclical switching sequence that would prevent the SmartView devices from operating correctly.

    • Avoid creating two names for the same computer port. • When cascading to other SmartView devices, do not apply individual names to any ports that are forming a link group to another switch (i.e. ports 1, 2, 3 and 4 when they form link group 41).

  • Page 23: Hot Plugging And Mouse Restoration

Hot plugging and mouse restoration It is strongly recommended that you switch off a computer before attempting to connect it to the SmartView World. However, if this is not possible then you need to ‘hot plug’ the computer while it is still running. There is not normally a danger of damage to the computer, however, when mouse communications are interrupted, often they fail to re-initialise when reconnected.
