DS-64NC Synchronous Data Module
Version 9.1
3. Set the address for the module using the SCB ADDRESS switch bank (S1 – Table 2-3). In a full-
size shelf, this address is generally set to the number of the physical slot the module occupies. It
may be set to any number from 1 to 36 that is not already in use by another module in the same
multiplexer shelf.
Note: If you install the module and later need to change the SCB address, remove the module,
change the address, and then reinstall it.
4. Select T1-based or E1 (2 MB)-based operation using the E1 switch (S6/position 2): UP for T1,
DOWN for E1.
5. Select time slot 16 as reserved or available using the CAS switch (S6/position 1): UP (normal) to
make time slot 16 available for payload, DOWN to reserve time slot 16 for signaling. Set this
switch down only if this module is going into an E1 multiplexer using CAS signaling.
6. Set the data rate using the DATA RATE switch bank (S4/positions 1 - 8). Table 2-9 lists common
data rates; Appendix B contains a complete list of settings for all available data rates.
7. Select the number of bits used for payload in each time slot using the 56K switch (S2/position 2):
UP (normal) for 64 kbps per time slot, DOWN for 56 kbps per time slot.
8. Select sequential or alternating time slot usage with the ALT switch (S2/position 3): UP (normal)
for sequential, DOWN for alternating.
9. Determine the number of time slots required for the data:
a. Divide the data rate (Step 5) by the number of bits per time slot (previous step).
b. Round up to the next whole number.
10. Select the starting time slot using the TIMESLOT switches (S2/positions 4-8 – Table 2-4 for T1
and Table 2-5 for E1). Make sure that there are sufficient slots above the starting one to hold all
the data, and that none of these slots is currently occupied by data from any other channel
module in the system.
11. Select the transmit mode using the TX MODE switches (S3/positions 7 & 8 – Table 2-8).
12. Select the module for transmit-only or duplex operation using the RX ON switch (S3/position 6):
UP for transmit-only, DOWN (normal) for full duplex.
13. Select transmit/receive directions using the TERM switch (S5/position 1): UP to transmit and
receive via the DI-B common module in a drop and insert multiplexer; DOWN for use in a terminal
multiplexer or to transmit and receive via the DI-A common module in a drop and insert
multiplexer.
14. Select the starting depth for the transmit and receive buffers using the BUFF switch (S2/position
1): UP (normal) for synchronous transmission; DOWN for plesiochronous transmission.
15. Set the external timing output on or off using the AUX switch (S5/position 2): UP (normal) to turn
off the external timing output; DOWN to activate the external timing output.
Note: You should only activate the external timing output when the multiplexer is to be synchronized
to the DS-64NC module's Receive Clock signal. To achieve this synchronization, you must also
perform three tasks:
1. Connect the timing output jack on the module adapter for this module to the Timing In
jack on the module adapter for the multiplexer common module.
2. Set the common module to use External Timing.
3. Ensure that the equipment connected to this module is providing data and timing signals
on the current pins (Tables A-3 – A-6 in Appendix A).
