• System Restore USB Flash Drive • Power Adapter cable for Master Module Do not use the System Restore drive for anything other than S4 System Restore software. Do not use this drive to store audio files or any other data or software.
Product Activation and Software License Activation Activate your S4 system software online as instructed later in this guide. You must use the System ID on the included S4 System Software Activation Card to activate and download all S4 system software and documentation. You will also need to activate your S4 software license after installing the software.
About This Guide This guide explains how to assemble S4 and uses the following to identify different elements of the system. • The names of , and that appear on-screen are in a different font. Commands Options Settings • The names of switches and keys on the control surface are shown in bold (such as...
The Master Module is the primary module of the system, providing the Touchscreen, two banks of Soft Keys, a monitoring section and other controls. Each system must have one Master Module. In S4 systems the Master Module supports up to 24 fader strips and can control up to two connected workstations.
Channel Modules The Channel Strip Module provides the fader strips of the system. S4 systems support a maximum of three Channel Strip Modules. Channel Strip Module Each Channel Strip Module (CSM) provide a lower fader section, central function select section, and an upper knob section. The lower fader section has eight motorized faders, eight displays, multiple switches and indicator LEDs.
Page 15
Display Module The S4 frame is designed to ensure adequate ventilation and cooling for the Display Module. If you are installing a Display Mod- ule in a custom (non-Avid) frame, be sure that the frame does not obstruct the Display Module air vents. Any unit that has been installed in a custom frame will have its warranty voided if the fault is found to be due to insufficient ventilation.
Channel, Option, and the Master sections can be arranged in almost any order, left-to-right, with only one restriction: the Master Module cannot be installed at the far left. For example, for an S4 16-fader system in a 3-foot frame the master section modules can be located in two possible locations, as shown below.
Chapter 4: Hardware Assembly Make sure you have already determined your desired module arrangement (see “Module Layout” on page 10). Assembling your S4 is simple and involves the following steps: • Installing the Frame • Positioning Cables • Connecting and Installing Modules •...
• Install Display Modules, if any. About These Instructions The following instructions use the example of an expanded S4 8-fader system (see Figure 1). This configuration provides 8 fader strips, a standard master section, plus optional Display, Joystick, and Knob modules. In these installation instructions: •...
3- and 4-foot. Also, built-in power and Ethernet cables are not show in all images. If you are installing S4 into custom furniture you can remove the side covers (end caps). Use an M4 hex driver to remove the five M4x6 fasteners from each side cover.
• Cable ties secure cables to the bottom of the chassis. If necessary, cut one or more cable ties that are closest to the ends of ca- bles, then route the cables between chassis as needed. • A bag of new cable ties is also included with the frame. Use these to re-secure cables in their new chassis location(s). S4 Installation Guide...
Connecting and Installing Modules Install all modules beginning with the left-most chassis. Begin with the slot/module closest to the front (slot 1). In our example configuration we are installing a Channel Strip Module in chassis 1. If your left-to-right module arrangement differs from our example configuration, use the instructions in the following sections as appropriate: •...

• If you are not installing a CSM in the next chassis, see “Installing Master Section Modules” on page 19 or “Installing Option Modules” on page 22 as appropriate for your chassis 2. • Refer back to these CSM instructions if you are installing one or more additional CSMs. S4 Installation Guide...

Installing Master Section Modules Installing the Automation Module is nearly identical to installing a Channel Strip Module. Installing the Automation Module To install the Automation Modules: If you have not already done so, unpack the Automation Module and Master Module. Remove the large black plastic covering from the opening in the back of the chassis where you plan to install the Master Module.
Page 26
After connecting Ethernet to the primary (side) Ethernet port of the Master Module, do either of the following (see Figure 12): • Recommended: If you are not connecting S4 to an existing DHCP Server on your network (and/or if connecting the S4 switch directly to one or more workstations) connect the second chassis Ethernet cable to Ethernet port 2 (right) on the back panel of the Master Module.
Page 27
Install the connected Master Module into its chassis. The Master Module occupies two slots. Make sure to orient it correctly, seating it fully against the top edge of the Automation Module. Do not fold or pinch any cables. Pay special attention to the connectors for power, Ethernet, and Talkback (optional). When placing the Master Module into the frame, guide cables around (not over) internal components such as the PDU or switch.

Make sure the module sits fully into the frame and not on top of any other modules, panels, or cables Unpack the next Attention Knob Module (or whichever Option module you want in slot 3) and connect power and Ethernet. S4 Installation Guide...

• Newer Display Module packages include two brackets, one smaller (S6) bracket that lets you position Display Modules lower and closer to the back of the frame, and a larger (S4) bracket that lets you mount them higher and closer to the operator. If your Display Module packages include both brackets it is recommended to use the larger S4 brackets.

Connect one end of the single Ethernet cable (included in the Frame package) to one of the Cat53 Ethernet ports on the back of the S4. If you plan on connecting S4 directly to two workstations, connect another Ethernet cable (not included) to the other Ethernet port on the back of the S4.
Identify the IEC power cable included in the Frame package appropriate for your region (UK, EU, or US). Connect one end to the power connector on the back of the S4 and connect the other end to an AC source.
• Start up the system for the first time to confirm power and Ethernet (see “Starting Up and Shutting Down” on page 31). • Activate and Register your purchase (see “S4 Software Activation” on page 32). • Acquire updated S4 software (see “Logging in as Administrator and Updating Master Module Software” on page 32). This section explains how to add modules to an S4 system. S4 systems are available in three different frame widths (3-, 4-, and 5-foot). Base configurations all include one empty chassis (“bucket”) for system expansion. S4 systems can be expanded in the following ways: Up to a maximum of three Channel Strip Modules can be installed (requires a 4- or 5-foot frame).
Wait until the Master Module has completely shut down before proceeding. Always shut down the Master Module from the About page before powering down the system! Turn off S4 by pressing its back panel power switch to the Off position. S4 Installation Guide...
