  • Page 7: Proper Use

2.2 Proper use A compressed air driven drum and container pump comprises motor and pump tube to suit the particular application. Application of the compressed air motors MD1xL and MD2xL in explosive hazard areas or for pumping flammable liquids is only allowed in combination with a pump tube approved for category 1/2 G. • Motor may only be operated with pump tube. • The motor must not be immersed in the liquid being pumped.
  • Page 8: Specific Danger

Danger of explosion from use in an explosion hazard area! The classification of flammable liquids is made according to regulation (EC) 1272/2008 (CLP). When pum- ping flammable liquids, the operational safety regulation and the following points have to be observed: Compressed air motors are non-electrical operating appliances not requiring official approval when used in zone 1. • The compressed air motors correspond to the ATEX-directive (groupe II, category 2 for gases and dust). • The motors are therefore suitable for driving Lutz drum- and container pumps of category 1/2. • Application restrictions are depending on the respective pump tube (→ operating instructions pump tube). • Only authorized for mobile use. • Connect equipotential bonding (→ chapter 9). • Use conductive pressure hoses only (→ operating instructions pump tube).

    • Before connecting the motor to the compressed air supply, clean the compressed air line and the hose by blowing out with low pressure to remove any dirt particles from the line. Wear safety goggles, hold the line tight and do not stand in the area of the airflow. • Main air lines (6) require a slight inclination of at least 1% in the direction of flow so that condensation water may be drained through a valve (7) at the lowest point (manually or automatically). • Branch pipes should be connected pointing upwards (5) in the case of a horizontal main line (6) - and in the case of a vertical main line (4) not at the lowest point. Thus, any condensation water collected in the main line will be prevented from flowing into the branch. • Use maintenance units (3) consisting of air filter and oiler. The oiler is not necessary for motors MD1xL and MD2xL, but is recommended for longer service life. The motor power is 10-20% lower with non lubricated air than with lubricated air.

    • Install the maintenance unit with an air connection of at least G 1/4 in the immediate vicinity of the compressed air motor (1). Use a resin-free and acid-free mineral oil with a viscosity of 20 to 30 mm²/s in the oiler (3). The oil consumption should be 1 drop per minute as a minimum. • The air filter (3) requires regular maintenance during which the trapped condensation water is drained and the filter is cleaned. • The compressed air motor will achieve maximum performance at 6 bar (87 psi). The pressure in the pneumatic system exceeding 6 bar, a pressure regulator (3) must be installed. Adjustment of the pressure regulator (3) must be effected with the motor running. • Install an air hose (2) of 13 mm inside diameter between maintenance unit and compressed air motor to minimize the pressure losses. • Use a stop valve in the pressure line in order to connect and disconnect the motor without pressure. •...

Danger of injury due to uncontrolled restarting of the motor! ► The pump must not be left unattended while in operation. ► If the power supply fails, the motor must be switched off. Fig. 4 5.1 Controlling compressed air motor MD1xL ► For switching-on/off the motor, insert a check valve in the com- pressed air line (e.g. ball valve from Lutz accessories). 5.2 Controlling compressed air MD2xL ► On: Move switch from the off-position (→ Fig. 5, item 1) to the required speed (→ Fig. 5, item 2).

    • Clean muffler • Dust in the environment If none of the above defects is detected, the compressed air motor must be repaired. 7. Repairs ► Repairs should only be made by the manufacturer or authorized Lutz dealers. ► Only use original Lutz Pumpen spare parts. If other spare parts are used, liability on the part of Lutz Pumpen is obsolete. 8. Disposal Dispose of the motor according to the locally applicable regulations.

9.4 Equipotential bonding and earthing ► Before starting up, an equipotential bonding must be established between the pump, the container to be emptied and the container to be fi lled(→ Fig. 6). ► Clamp the equipotential bonding cable (order no. 0204-994) to create an equipotential bonding between the pump and the container to be emptied. For better conductivity, remove the paint and dirt from the clamping points.

    • Rooms in which media are transferred from one drum or container to another: Zone 1 The result for drum and container pumps is: ► Only pump tubes of unit group II, category 1/2 G may be used to pump flammable liquids. ► Regardless of their type of protection, motors may not be used in zone 0. ► Motors of unit group II, category 2 G may be used in zone 1. 9.6 Traceability Products for potentially explosive atmospheres are identified by an individual serial number. Lutz Pumpen ensures the traceability of this device up to the initial point of delivery according to ATEX Directive. All persons who redeliver the device are obliged to guarantee its traceability to enable subsequent recall actions.
