In order to maintain the quality of a TECUMSEH compressor
and ensure its smooth operation, the following is advised:
- Perform soldering with dry nitrogen and keep all naked
flames away from the electrical equipment.
- Insulate the suction line as far as the compressor intake.
Anti-condensation material must be used.
- Only use the fluid for which the compressor has been
designed (see serial label).
- Do not add any additives or dyes to the refrigerant.
- Do not add oil unless the pipes are longer than 20 m; if this
is the case, use oil recommended by TECUMSEH.
- Ensure that any pressure relief connections are directed in
such a way that they are not a danger to the user. Cut and
shape the tubes carefully in order to prevent the ingress
of dust and metallic particles inside the system. Never
use a saw. Use a special bending tool which is adapted
to the tube diameter in order to avoid major restrictions.
TECUMSEH recommends soldered connections rather than
dudgeon-type screwed connections to limit the probability
of leaks over time. Screwed connections on a flat surface
plane using a seal or gasket are acceptable.

Tightening torques

■ 3.3.
- Suction valve Ø1 3/8": 144 Nm to 156 Nm.
- Suction valve Ø1 1/8": 85 Nm to 95 Nm.
- Angled fitting to screw in to the suction: 85 Nm to 95 Nm.
- Angled fitting to screw in to the discharge: 85 Nm to 95 Nm.

Suspension

■ 3.4.
All TECUMSEH compressors are supplied as standard with an
external suspension kit comprising vibration absorbers and
sleeves.
These vibration absorbers are designed to dampen the
transmission of the vibrations generated by the compressor
through the base on which the compressor is mounted.
In order to ensure this function is provided correctly, the
vibration absorbers must never be restricted. For this purpose,
the washer resting on the spacer must allow for a play of 1 to
4 mm with the top of the vibration absorber.
The following tightening torques are recommended, so as not
to distort the spacer:
- 5 to 10 Nm for an M6 screw,
- 8 to 13 Nm for an M8 screw.

Electrical connections

■ 3.5.
To preserve the quality of the TECUMSEH compressor,
the safety of the installation and to ensure correct operation,
it is essential to observe the following:
- Always wire the compressor once disconnected from the
mains voltage.
- Check the compatibility of the supply voltage for the
installation with that of the compressor (see serial label).
- Check the compatibility of the wiring diagram of the
compressor with that of the installation.
- Dimension the connection cables (power, control) accord-
ing to the characteristics of the installed compressor
(see serial label).

- Protect the electrical power supply line, which must include
a grounding cable.
- Perform the electrical connections in accordance with the
regulations in force in the respective country.
- Like the protection device, it is essential to use only the
relay supplied with the compressor, even if another model
number appears to work at any given time.
- All TECUMSEH compressors are protected by an external or
internal protection device, based on temperature/current.
As with any protection device, it is normal that this device will
cut the power supply to the compressor if it functions outside
of the normal operating ranges.

4 - COMMISSIONING

Circuit leak-tightness

■ 4.1.
Systematically check all connections for any leaks with an
electronic leak detector.
Refer to the TECUMSEH newsletter for any compressors
installed in parallel.

Vacuum purging

■ 4.2.
Vacuum purge the installation in order to achieve a residual
pressure of around 200 micrometers of mercury, guaranteeing
a good vacuum quality.
We advise vacuum purging the HP and LP circuits simulta-
neously. This allows the time spent on this operation to be
reduced and ensures an identical level of vacuum throughout
the circuit.

Refrigerant charge

■ 4.3.
Charge the installation using only the refrigerant for which the
compressor has been designed (see serial label).
The refrigerant is always loaded in the liquid phase, in order to
retain the correct mix ratio.
Never start the compressor if the vacuum is not broken in HP
and LP.
The remaining charge will be made until the nominal operating
conditions of the installation are achieved.
■ 4.4.

Pre-start-up checks

- Never leave the charge cylinder connected to the installation,
even with the valves shut,
- check the compatibility of the power supply voltage with
that of the compressor,
- check the calibration of the electrical safety devices,
- check that the service valves are fully open,
- check that the crankcase heater operates correctly.
