Changing Coil Hand

NOTE: Electric heat, chilled water, and hot water coil hand
cannot be changed.
To change direct expansion or steam coil hand, remove
coil according to coil instruction in coil removal section. The
coil cover panel is not part of the coil. Remove cover panel
from end of unit. New holes must be cut in coil cover panel.
Original holes must be plugged and insulated.
DIRECT EXPANSION COILS — Rotate the coil in vertical
plane and reinstall. Distributor must be on downstream side
of coil.
CHILLED WATER AND HOT WATER COILS — These
coils cannot be rotated. They are manufactured for right hand
and left hand so that supply is at bottom and return at top.
If coil is rotated in vertical plane and reinstalled, the supply
will be at top and return will be at bottom, and the coil will
not drain correctly. This arrangement is not recommended.
Chilled and hot water coils must not be rotated hori-
zontally. If coils are rotated horizontally, severe water
blow-off will result.
STEAM INNER DISTRIBUTING TUBE COILS — Rotate
in horizontal plane and reinstall.
PIPING — Direct expansion, chilled water, and hot water
coils should always be piped for counterflow. (Fluid should
enter the coil at the leaving-air side.) Steam coils must have
the condensate connection at bottom of coil.
Filters —
See Table 25 for filter data for flat filter section,
angle filter section, bag-cartridge filter section, and filter mix-
ing box section. Filters are field supplied.
Air filters should be inspected regularly and changed when
dirty. Filter life can vary greatly from one unit to another,
depending upon the application and the amount of contami-
nants in the return and ventilation air entering the air
handler. Each job should be evaluated and maintenance sched-
ules established accordingly. At a minimum, the filters should
be changed at the beginning of the cooling and heating
seasons.
Although not a direct part of the air handler, outdoor air
inlet screens and/or grilles that may be present should also
be checked regularly and cleaned as necessary. They can eas-
ily become plugged with debris, grease, or other contami-
nants, depending upon their location. This reduces the avail-
ability of ventilation air, which can contribute to indoor air
quality problems.
All filter sections use adjustable blank-off plates to close
off any airway area not filled with filter media. Check
blank-off plates to prevent unfiltered air from bypassing the
filters. Blank-off plates must be on door side of unit.
BAG-CARTRIDGE FILTERS — Bag-cartridge filter sec-
tion can use either bag or rigid filters, 6-in. or 12-in. deep,
with header. They will not accept headerless rigid filters.
Bag-cartridge filter sections used on blow-thru units are
loaded from the front, through the access door. These BCF2
sections use Farr Type 8 holding frames for prefilters and
bag/cartridge filters. Filter elements are retained in frames
by wire fastener clips. To install filter elements, remove clips,
insert elements with bag or cartridge downstream and rein-
stall clips. See Fig. 66.
See Fig. 67 for typical track for bag-cartridge filter sec-
tion used on draw-thru unit (BCF1).
FLAT FILTERS — Flat filter section accommodates 2-in. or
4-in. thick filters. The flat filter section as shipped accepts
2-in. filters. Remove angle spacer in each track to provide
the space required to accommodate 4-in. filters.
Filter arrangements are shown in Fig. 68-71.
END SPACERS — Filter section and spacers are shipped in
the filter track. When installed as shown in Fig. 68-71, the
spacers close off empty space in the track and prevent air
from bypassing the filters. Remove the spacers to install fil-
ter elements, and replace the spacers after the filters are in
place.
