Concepts and Applications

IP/IPX Networks

Integral routing allows for complete IP and IPX services between branch and
central sites as well as to the public Internet services. Full support for IP and
IPX routing and bridging for non-IP/IPX protocols allows quick and easy
deployment of networking applications. Additionally, Nortel Networks'
intelligent routing technology ensures efficient use of WAN bandwidth.

IP/IPX Features
Description
Offers robust, feature-rich IP
routing capabilities.
Allows bridging in point-to-point
and star topologies.
Incorporates the latest RIP
standard supporting Variable
Length Subnet Masks (VLSM)
and the Classless Inter-
Domain Routing (CIDR)
addressing scheme.
Passport 4400s can interwork
with other routers using frame
relay PVCs and the RFC 1490
encapsulation standard.
Routing function is performed
by base product.
Prevents ARP Broadcast
Storms from traversing the
WAN in applications where
TCP/IP packets are bridged.
In IPX networks, this feature
intercepts frequently-sent RIP
and SAP broadcast information
packets and handles them
locally, rather than
broadcasting over the WAN.
In IPX networks, RIP/SAP
deltas send only routing and
SAP table updates across the
WAN instead of periodically
sending the entire tables.

Benefits
Fully compliant with IP
standards to interwork with
third-party products.
Supports all LAN networking
protocols.
Offers broad network design
possibilities.
Allows the network to connect
to the Internet over public frame
relay.
No additional modules or
external routers are required.
Reduces the amount of traffic
forwarded across the WAN,
saving bandwidth for other
traffic.
