National standards and state, provincial and federal laws require the user to be trained before using this product. Use this manual as part of
a user safety training program that is appropriate for the user's occupation. These instructions must be provided to users before use of the
product and retained for ready reference by the user. The user must read, understand (or have explained), and heed all instructions, labels,
markings and warnings supplied with this product and with those products intended for use in association with it.

  • Page 4 The brake operates even when the manual force is removed. The winch is designed for use with the MSA Workman Tripod. See fi gure 3. The winch serves as the primary lifting-lowering device for systems which use the tripod to position equipment for confi ned space entry above the area to be accessed.

    MSA Workman Winch P/N 10147048 User Instructions PLANNING THE USE 3.1. SET UP ● Erect the tripod according to the tripod instructions. Erect only to height where the tripod head is reachable by the installer. ● Place the winch to the side of the tripod leg.

    MSA Workman Winch User Instructions P/N 10147048 CAUTION • Inspect the winch according to the instructions in Section 6 of this manual before and after each use. Also inspect each component with which the winch will be used according to the instructions accompanying that product. If any component is found to be damaged or altered, immediately remove the system from use.
  • Page 8 The winch is a lifting / lowering / positioning winch only. It is not to be used as a fall arrest device. Personnel using the winch for lifting / lowering / positioning must have a backup fall arrest system, such as a SRL with retrieval function or other MSA SRL, plus a full body harness. When using the winch for personnel, never have more than one person on the winch at the same time.

    4.2. LOWERING A LOAD NOTE When using the winch for lifting / lowering of personnel, an independent fall arrest system is required. The MSA SRL with retrieval function or other MSA SRL is recommended. Other fall arrest systems are also available from MSA.

  • Page 13 MSA Workman Winch User Instructions P/N 10147048 6.2.6. HOUSING AND DRUM Look carefully for signs of cracks, dents, deformation or ruptures in the housing and drum. Return for service if material cracks are found. Accidently dropping the unit may lead to some defor- mation of internal components.
  • Page 14 (see ANSI Z359.0 for further detail). MSA recommends periodic factory authorized recertifi cation of mechanical devices according to the intervals in the table below. While this is considered best practice, it is ultimately at the discretion of the competent person. MSA requires periodic competent person inspection by someone other than the user according to the intervals in the table below or local regulations.
