This document describes how to unpack and install any
configuration of a REO 9100 storage appliance running
Protection OS version 5.0.x software into a standard
RETMA 19" rack.
Before unpacking the unit, ensure that the area is free
from conditions that cause electrostatic discharge (ESD).
Discharge static electricity from your body by touching a
known grounded surface. Also, avoid touching pins, leads,
or circuitry.
First Things First—Activate Your Warranty!
Before installing your new unit, it is essential that you
activate your REO warranty. Technical and warranty
support are not available until this is done:
1. Go to the Overland Technical Support website at:
http://support.overlandstorage.com/
2. Using the MEMBER LOGIN, log in to the site.

Preparing REO 9100 for Installation
IMPORTANT: Overland recommends that you install the
unit in a clean, controlled environment where the air is
free from dust as possible.
Because of its weight when loaded with disk drives, each
REO 9100 array ships in two boxes. Box One contains:
• REO 9100 appliance
• Rail kit and hardware
• Hardware bag (8 washers, 2 clip nuts, & 2 screws)
• Four power cords
• REO 9100 Documentation CD
• This quick start guide
Installing REO 9100 in 19-Inch Rack
WARNING: Install units in the rack from the bottom up.
Extending a unit with empty spaces beneath it might
cause the rack to tip causing damage or injuries.

3. From the menu on the left, select My Products > Add
or Register a Product, and follow the on-screen
instructions.
Box Two contains 24 numbered disk carriers, with either
12 or 24 drives installed, depending on the configuration.
CAUTION:
Overland strongly recommends that you
install power conditioning and an adequately rated
uninterruptible power supply (UPS), especially in areas
prone to blackouts, power dips, and electrical storms.
The REO is intended to be grounded. Ensure it is
connected to earth ground during normal use.
Verify the AC power to the appliance is disconnected
before you install or remove the drive carriers.
Installing the Rail Kit
The REO 9100 comes with a rail kit for mounting the
appliance in a 19-inch rack. The unit has a 5U form factor.
