3 Setup and usage
3.1 Prior to installation
WARNING!
When establishing the mounting position for the
Invacare® Matrx® Mini back, ensure the stability of the
wheelchair is not compromised. Adjusting the forward
and aft position of the backrest will alter the user's
center of gravity within the wheelchair. A recessed back
position can significantly reduce the rearward stability of
the wheelchair. Similarly, a more forward back position
will reduce the wheelchair's forward stability.
WARNING!
– The procedures in this manual should be performed
by a qualified technician.
– After any adjustments, repair or service and before
use, make sure that all attaching component parts are
secure.
– Do not install the Invacare® Matrx® Mini assembly
onto back canes with an outside diameter greater
than 25 mm or less than 19 mm. Otherwise, injury or
damage may occur.
– The mounting position of the Invacare® Matrx®
Mini is directly related to the chair's stability. When
the Invacare® Matrx® Mini is added to a tilt and/or
reclining chair, it may cause a decrease in the chair's
stability. It may be necessary to reposition the front
casters, rear wheels, backrest angle, tilt-in-space,
recline position and/or seat depth before use.
– Use extreme caution when using a new seating position.
– When a Matrx® Mini is added to a tilt and/or reclining
chair, a rigidizer bar or crossbar must be present to
stabilize the back canes.
– Ensure the Invacare® Matrx® Mini is properly secured
to the wheelchair before using. Otherwise injury or
damage may occur.

Re-configuring the mounting plate configuration
The mounting plates A are pre-assembled on the cane clamps B in
the rearmost mounting configuration. This maximizes the seat depth
of the wheelchair seat up to a maximum 64 mm rearward offset.
By changing the orientation of the mounting plates on the cane
clamps, the assembly can be re-configured to provide a more forward
mounting position for the back if desired up to a maximum 64 mm
forward offset.
Each mounting plate is also designed to provide 38 mm of
fore and aft adjustment relative to the cane clamp.
1.
Detach the mounting plate from the cane clamp by removing the
2 depth/recline adjustment screws.
2.
Remove the cane clamp from the backrest tube by removing the
cane clamp screw.
3.
Rotate the cane clamp 180° and re-fasten it to the mounting plate.
4.
Install the cane clamp to the backrest tube as illustrated above.

WARNING!
Risk of injury
– If there is an uneven seam along the backrest tubes
where a smaller diameter tube is inserted into a larger
diameter tube, the cane clamps must be mounted
above or below the seam. Do not overlap.
Apply the inner cane clamp C to the backrest tube D. Optionally
1.
position the plastic inserts A around the backrest tubes.
2.
Close the outer cane clamp B around the backrest tube.
IMPORTANT!
Risk of damage
– When using the plastic inserts A, make sure that they
are correctly positioned between the cane clamp.
Fix the cane clamp assembly with screw E.
3.
3.2 Installing the backrest tube clamps (Fig. 3)
WARNING!
Risk of injury
The installation hardware provided is high strength and
tested for durability.
– Do not substitute hardware. Use only the hardware
supplied.
1.
Remove existing wheelchair back (if applicable).
2.
Establish the desired mounting plate set-up/configuration for the
user, see chapter 3.1 Prior to installation, page 5 .
3.
Loosen the cane clamp screw and loosely install the clamp (with
mounting bracket) onto each backrest tube. (Install plastic inserts
if required).
4.
Starting on one side, position the backrest tube clamp at the
desired height on the backrest tube and tighten the clamp screw
enough to hold it in place. (The clamps can be fully tightened after
the back is installed and all final adjustments have been made.)
5.
From a fixed point on the wheelchair (e.g. seat frame/rigidizer
bar) measure the exact height of the installed backrest tube clamp
assembly, and install the second backrest tube clamp at the same
height on the opposite backrest tube.
IMPORTANT!
– Make sure that the backrest tube clamps/mounting
B
plates are mounted parallel with each other.
3.3 Installing the mounting pins (Fig. 4)
Insert the backing plate A in the correct orientation into the
1.
backrest pan C.
2.
Install the mounting pins B.
3.4 Installing the Matrx® Mini backrest (Fig. 5)
Slide the lower mounting pins B into the hooked slots at the
1.
bottom of each mounting plate C
2.
With the lower pins in place, lock/snap the upper mounting pins
A into the latch mechanism at the top of the mounting plates.
WARNING!
– Always ensure both latch mechanisms are fully engaged
around the upper mounting pins following installation.
Before proceeding with the final set-up, the mounting pins
may require adjustment to ensure the backrest is properly
fitted/secured to the wheelchair.
