18. Inspection and evaluation (see Figure 16).
• Inspect the motor shaft (H), bearing (I) and gear (J).
If replacing the bearing, note that the seal is toward
the gear. Examine the motor shaft for damage to the
splines and bearing. Examine the thrust bearing and
races (F). Note that the thrust bearing race with the
lettering on it goes in the swashplate (G). Any form of
damage here would require replacement of all the
parts
• Examine the rotating groups carefully. Be sure to
reinstall the pistons (A) in the same bore they were
removed from. Also make sure the washer inside
each piston is accounted for. Make sure the pistons
and bores in the motor block are free of scratches.
Pistons should move up and down smoothly and eas-
ily in their bores. Also look at the bottom of the cylin-
der block where it contacts the center section: make
sure there is no excessive scratching or wear.
Caution: under no circumstances should you ever
remove the snap ring that retains the center spring in
the rotating groups. The spring is under considerable
force and can easily cause serious injury.
• Closely examine the running surfaces of the center
section and charge pump for any signs of excessive
wear, damage or scratches. If you can feel scratches
with a sharp pencil or fingernail on any of these sur-
faces, they should be replaced.
• Remove and inspect the release valve pin (D).
