Cause
Observation: sensitivity is too low
Leak upstream or downstream
of column
Nozzle is broken
Nozzle is incorrectly adjusted
Combustion gas flow too low,
combustion air flow too high
Sample quantity too high:
FPD is at saturation
Deposit on quartz window or
on reflector
Incorrect interference filter
fitted
Photomultiplier was exposed to
daylight with detector voltage
applied
The measured component is
superimposed by an interfering
component of higher concen-
tration which is not indicated
by the FPD. This changes the
flame temperature and thus
decreases the sensitivity
(quench effect)
EXFPD.CHP
Stand September 14, 1999
Remedy
Find and eliminate leak
Replace nozzle
Adjust nozzle, refer to
Replacement of quartz nozzle
Optimize flow rates
Inject smaller sample quantity
Clean quartz window and
reflector
Install correct filter:
- appears blue for Sulphur
- appears yellow for Phosphorus
Replace photomultiplier
Improve separation such that
the measured component is not
superimposed
FPD - flame photometric detector
4 - 27
