Coolants

The coolant is a mixture of water and
anti-corrosion/antifreeze. In produc
tion, the cooling system is filled with
an anti-corrosion/antifreeze-w ater
mixture offering protection to approx.
— 30° C/ — 22° F. The red mark on the
tem perature gauge in the instrum ent
cluster is matched to this anti-corro-
sion/antifreeze-w ater mixture
(approx. boiling point 125° C/257° F).
The protection against corrosion is
also ensured by this m ixture making it
unnecessary to add a corrosion
inhibitor.
The coolant remains in the cooling
system all year long and m ust be
renewed after 3 years at the latest.
If coolant is lost, replace missing
quantity with water (potable water
quality) plus anti-corrosion/antifreeze
of a recom m ended brand.
For reasons of corrosion inhibition
the minimum proportion of anti-corro-
sion/antifreeze m ust be 34 % , which
gives anti-corrosion/antifreeze pro
tection down to —20° C / — 4° F.
If anti-corrosion/antifreeze is tem por-
arily not available, add a corrosion

inhibitor to the cooling w ater to
ensure proper protection against
corrosion. To treat the cooling water,
do not use more than 1 % (10 cm 3/l)
of a recom m ended corrosion inhibi
tor.
W ithout anti-corrosion/antifreeze in
the cooling system, the water already
starts boiling at approx. 118° C/
224° F, w hich means that the pointer
o f the tem perature gauge in the
instrum ent cluster may still be below
the red mark.
Driving the vehicle w ith ou t anti-corro-
sion/antifreeze should be done only
in em ergency situations. Add anti
corrosion/antifreeze as soon as pos
sible.
Anti-corrosion/Antifreeze
Your vehicle contains a number of
aluminium parts. The use of alumin
ium com ponents in m otor vehicle
engines necessitates that anti-corro
sion/antifreeze/coolant used in such
engines be specifically form ulated to
p ro te ct the aluminium parts. (Failure
to use such anti-corrosion/anti-
freeze/coolant may result in a signi
ficantly shortened service life.)
While there may be a number of
anti-corrosion/antifreeze/coolants
available w hich will provide the
requisite protection, all such prod
ucts have not been tested fo r
MERCEDES-BENZ vehicles. The fo l
lowing product, however, is recom
mended fo r use in your car:
MERCEDES-BENZ Anti-Freeze and
Sum m er Coolant.
Prior to the onset of the cold season,
check the coolant fo r sufficient
protection to prevent freezing.
Repeat this check during the cold
spell. Regular testing of the anti
corrosion/antifreeze concentration
is carried out at each MERCEDES-
BENZ maintenance service.
