Ten everyday savings
Heating – turn your central
1
heating down by just 1°C and
you could save.
Curtains – a pair of heavy
2
curtains can keep the heat in.
Great if you don't have double
glazing.
Wash at 30°C – machine
3
washing clothes at this
temperature uses 40% less
energy than higher temperatures.
Avoid using standby – some
4
appliances use 90% of their
energy in standby mode –
so turn it off.
Cooking – keep pot lids on and
5
cut food into smaller pieces to
speed up cooking time. And only
fill your kettle with the amount of
water you actually need.
Dishwashers – wait until you've
6
got a full load and use economy
programmes whenever you can.
Save money by drying clothes
7
outside when possible instead
of using your tumble dryer.
Fridges – don't put your fridge
8
beside a cooker or radiator.
You'll be heating it up and paying
to cool it down again.
Take showers – they use up a lot
9
less energy than a bath.
Make sure you fix any dripping
hot water taps.
Turn off the lights – they eat up
10
about a quarter of the average
electric bill so turn them off when
you don't need them. Choose
energy saving bulbs or LED lights
(which are the cheapest to run)
and avoid spotlights.
