Engine Operation

TAKEOFF

Refer to Pilot's Operating Handbook / Airplane
Flight Manual for specific instructions.
1. Position mixture to FULL RICH. Where
installed, cowl flaps must be positioned as
specified by the aircraft manufacturer.
2. Position fuel boost pump switch as instructed by
the aircraft manufacturer.
3. Adjust throttle to obtain full rated power for
takeoff. During takeoff, observe manifold
pressure, RPM, fuel flow, coolant temperature
and oil pressure. All must be within normal
limits.
CAUTlON...
Never allow coolant and oil temperatures to exceed
the
specifed
limitations.
temperatures should occur only when operating
under adverse conditions, such as high power
settings,
low
air
temperature, etc. Reduce such temperatures as soon
as possible.

CLIMB

Refer to Pilot's Operating Handbook / Airplane
Flight Manual for specific instructions.
WARNING
Mixture must be full rich when climbing at
power settings above 75%. Closely monitor
coolant and oil temperatures.
Climb must normally be done at FULL RICH
mixture setting with cowl flaps, if provided, fully
open.
NOTE...
Fluctuation in fuel flow indication may be caused by
vapor in the fuel supply to the engine. If this occurs,
operate the fuel boost pump as recommended by
Pilot's Operating Handbook / Airplane Flight
Manual.
Observe manifold pressure, RPM, fuel flow, coolant
temperature, oil pressure and temperature. After
1-6
Near-maximum
speed,
extreme
ambient
obstacle clearance, increase air speed by reducing
rate of climb, if necessary, to control temperatures.

CRUISE

Follow the specific leaning procedure in the airframe
manufacturer's
Pilot's
Airplane Flight Manual.

DESCENT

Refer to Pilot's Operating Handbook / Airplane
Flight Manual specific instructions.
1. Accomplish decent from altitude by reducing
engine RPM while maintaining cruise manifold
pressure setting.
CAUTION...
Avoid descents at high RPM and low manifold
pressure settings.
2. During descent, monitor coolant and oil
temperature and maintain above the minimum
recommended values.

LANDING

Refer to Pilot's Operating Handbook / Airplane
Flight Manual for specific instructions.
1. In anticipation of a go-around and the need for
high power settings, advance the mixture control
slowly toward FULL RICH and set the propeller
control at maximum RPM.
NOTE...
If engine roughness occurs with the mixture at full
rich, as may happen at very low throttle settings and
high RPM, moderate leaning of the mixture is
required to maintain smooth engine operation.
2. Operate the boost pump as instructed by aircraft
manufacturer.
