4. MAJOR SUBSYSTEMS AND THEIR FUNCTIONS

4.1 D
ESCRIPTION
The ARMA-C125-CRM is a 125 Watt solid state power amplifier (SSPA). The SSPA
incorporates a DC main power supply and a forced air cooling system. The SSPA features an
RS-485 interface that provides full remote monitor and control of selected functions. A product
outline drawing of the amplifier is shown in Figure 1 at page 11and a functional block diagram
is shown in Figure 2 at page 15.

There are three power supplies in each SSPA. The main power supply provides a single output,
DC high current to the HPA (High Power Amplifier) as well as a filtered, low current supply for
the second and the third power supplies. The secondary power supply has multiple outputs for
operation of the Monitor and Control Assembly and the front panel display. The third power
supply delivers a temperature controlled voltage between 11.5 VDC and 60 VDC that allows for
different rotating speeds of the cooling fans. The main Power Supply is configured to work from
90-132 or 180-265 VAC (autoranging), 47-63 Hz, single phase.
4.1.2 HPA A
SSEMBLY
The HPA Assembly amplifies the RF input signal to a level sufficient for transmission. Integral
to this module are low noise and power amplifier sections as well as variable attenuation sections
that are used for temperature compensation and gain control. Other functionality includes
internal power conditioning, temperature monitoring & high temperature shutdown.

ONTROL
SSEMBLY
The MCA (Monitor and Control Assembly) monitors all the important operating parameters of
the system, and communicates externally (via serial and discrete interfaces) as well as with the
front panel controls and display. This module controls the mode of operation of each amplifier
unit (remote or local).

SSEMBLY
The Waveguide Arm Assembly connects to the output of the HPA, at the back panel of the
amplifier. An output power monitor port, as well as forward and reverse power detectors are
included as part of this assembly.
