AWMA-C250 ----------------------------------------------- WARNING ----------------------------------------------------- When supplying power to this equipment, use the 3-pin connector provided to connect to a grounded power outlet; also use a ground strap between the station’s ground bus and the ground screw located on the SSPA frame and redundancy frame. If power is supplied without grounding to the equipment, there is a risk of receiving a severe or fatal electric shock.

AWMA-C250 3. MAJOR SUBSYSTEMS AND THEIR FUNCTIONS The Redundant 1:1 System contains 2 Solid State Power Amplifiers (SSPA) model AWMA-C250 mounted on a redundancy frame and interconnected via dedicated harnesses, waveguides, semi-rigid coaxial cables and waveguide switch. The entire system is intended for mounting near the hub of the antenna or behind the antenna as part of the balance weight (outdoor applications).
AWMA-C250 3.1.3 W AVEGUIDE SSEMBLY The Waveguide Arm Assembly of each unit includes a harmonic filter, a three-port output circulator and related power detectors (for Forward Power and for Reflected Power). • The output circulator provides one reflected power port coupled via a detector to the Monitor and Control board for reverse power protection.

AWMA-C250 3.4 P OWER UPPLY UBSYSTEM The Power Supply of each unit consists of two identical, 1200 W Power Supply modules. Each module can supply outputs as follows: • 3 x 30 A @ + 12V DC, • 3 x 0.1 A @ - 9V DC, •...
AWMA-C250 3.6 T OOLING UBSYSTEM The cooling subsystem of each unit includes the Fan and the harnesses provided for easy fan replacement. The cooling fan is configured for 220 VAC operation (pulsed controlled by a speed control PCB, which allows for a temperature dependent rotating speed). 3.7 LRU P HILOSOPHY The maintenance concept employed in each unit is to localize a malfunction or circuit failure...
AWMA-C250 4. UNPACKING AND INSTALLATION This section contains instructions for site preparation, unpacking and installation of the units. 4.1 I NITIAL NSPECTION Inspect the shipping container for damage. If the container or cushioning material is damaged, immediately contact the carrier that delivered the equipment and submit a damage report. Failure to do so could invalidate future claims.
AWMA-C250 Amplifiers (1:1) Assembly: Refer to Figure 1 (page 10) & Figure 6 (page 20). On the vertical standing frame install (hardware provided) two 250 watts units at stand-off. The waveguide outlets should be at top and fans at the back. From front the unit at left is labeled ‘A’ and the unit on the right is ‘B’. Figure 6: Main Frame Assembly Page 20...
AWMA-C250 To install the waveguide switch assembly, proceed as follows: 1. Position the interconnecting flange (from switch) so that it aligns precisely with the waveguide flange at the top of each unit. 2. Install the waterproof gasket (supplied) in the interconnecting flange. 3.
AWMA-C250 WARNING : Proper grounding of the AC power outlet is necessary for personnel and equipment safety. Use the ground stud provided on the unit and on the base frame to properly ground the entire system. TABLE 4: POWER (each unit) Power Requirements 220 ±...
The center pin of the connectors used by ADVANTECH has a precision tolerance measured in mils (1/1000 inch). The mating connectors of various suppliers may not be precision types. Consequently, the center pins of these devices may not have the proper depth.
AWMA-C250 5. INTERFACES Each unit is provided with interfaces that can be used to connect it with several optional external devices. The interfaces for this model (AWMA-C250) are listed bellow: 1. Serial Interface (J2): This interface provides communication and remote control via RS- 422/485 serial communication port.
AWMA-C250 5.1 S (1:1 R ERIAL NTERFACE EDUNDANT YSTEM The serial interface (P1) is typically used to control and monitor the system from a PC station, via an RS-422/485 serial communication port. The serial interface is located on redundant frame assembly.
AWMA-C250 5.2 D ISCRETE NTERFACE The Discrete Interface is typically used by those who desire to operate the unit remotely using switches for command and LEDs for status. Nevertheless it is suited for integration with a computer. The Discrete Interface is located at connector J3 on the connectors plate of the SSPA. J3 is a 26 - pin MS3114E16-26P (male) connector with pin assignment shown in TABLE 8 at page 28.
AWMA-C250 TABLE 8: DISCRETE INTERFACE (J3) – PIN ASSIGNMENTS (each unit) Name Type Active condition PWRON_S output (active closed) Indicates controller power is on. RFMUT_S output (active closed) Indicates RF output is muted (i.e. off). ALARM_S output (active open) Indicates operation at base plate temperature > 70 °C but <...
AWMA-C250 5.3 RF O UTPUT ONITOR This RF interface is located at J4 connector, ‘N’ Type, Female, on the connectors plate of each unit. It is typically used for independent monitoring of SSPA output power levels through the use of an external power meter. To determine the true output power in dBm, add the value measured at the RF Output Monitor Port (J4) to the calibrated coupling factor corresponding to the specific frequency.
AWMA-C250 6. INITIAL POWER ON AND CHECKOUT This section describes the procedure for turning on each unit for the first time. It also describes the steps for initial checkout of the system. Before proceeding with the steps in this section, read it completely, to become familiar with normal operation of the unit.
AWMA-C250 7. OPERATION 7.1 I NTRODUCTION This section describes the normal operation of the 1:1 Redundant System. The design of this equipment allows minimum operator intervention and maintenance. The units are completely self-controlled and have extremely reliable functionality in a very harsh environment. The system may be operated via the RS-422 serial interface or the discrete interface.
AWMA-C250 Change the address one by one. Power up just one unit at the time, to avoid any communication conflict. When you turn on the system for the first time, follow the sequence: 1. - Turn ON UNIT A 2. - Turn ON UNIT B Perform for each unit, the following normal operating procedure: 1.

AWMA-C250 7.4 RF C ONFIGURATION 7.4.1 S AFETY ONSIDERATIONS The VSWR protection at the output of the amplifier is designed to protect the unit against accidental operation with blocked waveguide (VSWR 3:1) at the RF output flange by causing the unit to shutdown automatically.
AWMA-C250 7.6 A MPLIFIER HUTDOWN Each unit shuts down due to an alarm or as a result of a hardware or software command. A software shutdown is achieved by selecting the MUTE ON function key sending the appropriate code via the RS-422 serial interface (see Section 7.9 at page 36). The amplifier can be restarted in a similar manner provided a hardware shutdown is not in effect.
