Graceful Power-off Requirements

On most operating systems, Write Cache is enabled by default. This is a feature of
the ATA standard and is not specific to WD Blue 3D NAND SATA SSDs. There may
be data residing in the WD Blue 3D NAND cache that have not been written to the
flash memory. To ensure that the data is properly committed to flash memory, the
WD Blue 3D NAND requires a STANDBY IMMEDIATE command before power down.
This command instructs the WD Blue 3D NAND SATA SSD to write all of its volatile
data cache to flash memory and returns a GOOD status to the host after its
successful completion. This command is handled transparently by most operating
systems during the shutdown sequence (e. g., hibernation, shutdown, and
standby).
However, if power is lost without warning – leading to an ungraceful shutdown –
data loss may occur. This may also lead to a longer power-on time for the
subsequent power-up.
