21.1 Chain Saw

Always disconnect the chain saw from the power supply before carrying out any inspection, cleaning or maintenance.
Condition
Chain saw cuts out during
operation.
Chain saw does not start
when switched on.
During sawing it smokes
or smells burnt.

Possible Cause
The chain saw was accidentally disconnected
from the power supply.
The GFCI has interrupted the electrical circuit. ► Reset the GFCI.
The electrical outlet is secured with less than
16 A.
The overload cutout was activated.
The chain saw was accidentally disconnected

supply.
► Use a properly secured power supply.
► Disengage the chain brake.
► Switch the chain saw back on.
► Properly tension the saw chain.
► Spray the guide bar sprocket with resin
remover.
► Seek help from a professional.
► Have the saw chain lubrication mechanism
checked by an authorized STIHL servicing
dealer.
