Privacy laws and notice requirements for electronic recording of telephone conversations
There are both federal and state statutes governing the use of electronic, mechanical or other
device recordings. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and many states have strict
rules about recording telephone conversations. When the person answers, let the caller know
right away that you are recording the call.
Copyright notice
Music and lyrics are subject to copyright protection in the United States. Copyright law applies
to recorded music - the musical work and the sound recording of that work. The musical work
refers to the notes and lyrics of a song. The performance of the lyrics and melody fixed in a
variety of formats, such as compact discs, vinyl records and digital downloads, are protected
as the sound recording. The public performance of music includes broadcast radio
transmissions or digital transmissions, such as AM or FM radio or satellite radio, digital,
satellite television, Internet and live concerts.
