Where should Carbon Monoxide Detectors be fitted?
Carbon Monoxide (CO) detectors should be fitted in rooms with a fuel burning appliance such as a central heating boiler
or gas fire and where a lot of time is spent e.g. the kitchen, living room or bedroom.
They should not be fitted in the bathroom or areas subject to steam or condensation.
Choosing a Location
When fitted in the same room as the appliance the CO detector should be wall mounted above the height of any window or door
but at least 150mm below ceiling level. If ceiling mounted it should be at least 300mm from any wall. In either case the detector
should be between 1 and 3 metres from the appliance.
When fitted in rooms remote from the appliance the detector should be wall mounted close to the breathing zone of the
occupant; in the living room this will be about head height of a seated person, in the bedroom this will be about pillow height.
The CO detector should not be located in an enclosed space, inside a cupboard, behind a curtain, directly above the cooker or
sink, in draughty areas next to a door or window or near an extractor fan.
Typical Tools Required
Be careful when using step ladders – always face the direction you are working.
Always make sure the correct drill bits and screwdrivers are used.

Installation – Using Self Adhesive Pads
