Sensor
The sensor establishes the current UV tolerance and the base tan of human
skin. The sensor measures right down into the lower skin layers, so that not
just the superficial skin colouring is assessed.
The first tanning session must be a test session, in order to establish if there
are any unexpected effects from the UV radiation. For the test tanning a min-
imum dosage of 100 J/m
2
always emitted automatically during the tanning session if no skin areas are
being measured and the sensor stays in the station from the very beginning.
The sensor must be used from the second tanning onwards, so that an opti-
mum tan can be achieved.
Since the face usually receives more exposure to the natural rays of the sun
than other parts of the body, two measurements are carried out before each
tanning session:
one on the forehead and
one at the lightest part of the body to be tanned, such as on the inside of
the upper arm or on the buttocks.
Based on these measurements, the necessary lamp output is then inde-
pendently set for the head and the body area. The tanning time remains the
same for all tanning sessions.
