Run Loopback

Use loopback to diagnose a fault on the optical link, either on the 3240S or with a cable. Set
loopback either in software for a managed 3240S or at the System Mode switch or I/O Port Mode
switch for the port on an unmanaged 3240S; always keep the switches at NORM for normal
operation. Figure 9 shows a flowchart for troubleshooting through loopback.
Local I/O port loopback returns the received electrical signal to the local site and ignores the
received optical signal. Faulty data can indicate that the local 3240S is faulty.
Remote I/O port loopback sends the signal from the local electrical input to the remote 3240S
optical port, where it is returned directly to the local 3240S. Faulty data can indicate that either
the fiber optic cable link or the optical portion of either the local or remote 3240S is faulty.
Local composite loopback returns the optical signal to the local site and ignores the received
optical signal. Faulty data can indicate that the local 3240S is faulty.
Remote composite loopback sends the signal from the local optical output to the remote 3240S
optical port, where it is returned directly to the local 3240S. Faulty data can indicate that either
the fiber optic cable link or the optical portion of either the local or remote 3240S is faulty.
To run I/O port loopback manually, follow these steps:
1. At the selected port, set the I/O Port Mode switch to LOC for local loopback or to REM for
remote loopback; loopback starts automatically.
2. To stop Loopback, set the I/O Port Mode switch to NORM.
