Options for the 3240S include AC or DC power, redundancy for both power and optics, and 1300/1550 nm single mode and 850/1300 nm multimode fiber optics. Figure 1 shows the front of the 3240S with the SNMP Management module. Figure 2 shows the rear of the 3240S with T1X and E1X cards.
Figure 3. Typical Point-to-Point Application In a Master/Slave Ring application, one multiplexer is designated as the master; it supplies the clock to the slave units; see Figure 4. Use the master/slave ring application with a non-managed 3240S. Note: The SNMP Module supports only local status and control for Master/Slave Ring applications.
Fiber optic options includes single or dual (redundant) fiber optic transmitters and receivers. If the primary transmitter or receiver fails, the 3240S turns on the alarm LED and, optionally, sends an alarm to the network management module. An optional HI/LO power switch for each transmitter (except low-power transmitters) provides compensation for link losses of typically more or less than 6 dB.
You can insert a card in either physical slot, but each card can communicate only with the card that uses the same time slots in another 3240S. Each pair of time slots can be used only once.

Both ends of each link must be set to the same line coding. For HDB3, install the jumper. For AMI, remove the jumper. If you will control the line coding through the software, install the jumper. Figure 6. E1X I/O Card 3240S Fiber-Optic Multiplexer...
EdgeAccess Installing the 3240S To install the 3420S, follow these steps: 1. Place the 3420S on a flat, secure surface as a standalone unit or use the brackets to mount it in a standard 19-inch rack. Figure 7 shows how the brackets can be attached.
Chapter 3: The default parameters for this port are 9600 baud, No Parity, 8 bits, and one stop bit (N, 8, 1) with VT100 terminal emulation. • 10BASE-T Port Supports standard 10 MHz Ethernet. You must set up the SNMP Agent and Host Table through the Console port before you can connect through Ethernet. 3240S Fiber-Optic Multiplexer...

EdgeAccess Using Non-Managed Mode To use the 3240S in non-managed, or manual, mode, check these front-panel switch settings: • Set the MODE switch to NOR for normal operation. You must change this switch manually for local or remote system loopback.
EdgeAccess Chapter 3 3240S Software and Managed Use You can use the 3240S without the SNMP module, in manual mode, or with the SNMP module, in managed mode. Setting Up for Managed Mode Typically, the 3240S runs within the network on an Ethernet connection, communicating with your Network Management Platform.
EdgeAccess Management User Interface The Management User Interface provides screens for setup, monitoring, and diagnostics. These sections discuss the screens for the 3240S. General Screen Format A typical screen, shown in Figure 8, includes standard descriptions and reference designations. Use this and other screens to configure the system, set operational parameters, and verify the system status.

Default Gateway IP Address: Address of the network node that connects to another network • BOOTP: Enable BOOTP requests if the 3240S needs to obtain its IP address from a BOOTP server; when the 3240S has an IP address, disable BOOTP 3.
Set Up and Use SLIP Mode The 3240S can run in Serial Line Internet Protocol (SLIP) mode. You must set up the SLIP IP address to run on a different network than the Ethernet IP address. Because SLIP runs point-to-point, the subnet mask is assumed from the IP address class type, see Table 4, and no gateway is allowed.
Host information for access to the 3240S on the Host Access Table screen. When a host attempts to access the 3240S, the IP address is authenticated against the entries on the host table. If a user attempts SNMP access from a host or network that is not listed in this table, the 3240S rejects that host and generates an authentication trap.

3. At the System or Port Trap Configuration menus, type the number for a trap and press <Enter>. For system traps, see Table 5 or for I/O port traps, see Table 6. Note: "Master Trap Control" enables or disables all traps. The factory default is Disabled. 3240S Fiber-Optic Multiplexer...
8) Backup Link OK/Bad The backup link changes between good and failed 9) Cold Start/Authentication The 3240S is reset by a power-up or SNMP reset or an unauthorized host attempts SNMP access with an incorrect community string 10) Power Supply/Malfunction One of dual power supplies fails Table 6.
Measure optical fiber links at the shortest wavelength of operation to determine the limiting factor in the loss budget. Each device that transmits to a 3240S has a loss budget that is specified by the manufacturer and recorded on a data sheet provided with the equipment. That loss budget must be greater than the total of the measured loss of the fiber link and the attenuation of the 3240S.

Technical Support. If you know the link attenuation, subtract that value from the 3240S Tx output value to determine the power expected at the remote cable end, which is the input power at the remote receiver, and skip this section.
• Send known data from the local equipment to the 3240S or connect a BERT tester and set it up to meet the circuit and interface specifications for data rate and mode. Be sure to use the existing fiber optic cables.
5. To stop the PING and return to the Utilities menu, press <Esc>. Run Loopback Use loopback to diagnose a fault on the optical link, either on the 3240S or with a cable. Set loopback either in software for a managed 3240S or at the System Mode switch or I/O Port Mode switch for the port on an unmanaged 3240S;...
