Unlike previous chipset designs (north bridge - south bridge design), the Intel 810 chipset
uses a hub architecture design. This design has 2 main components which are The
Graphics Memory Controller Hub(GMCH) and The I/O Controller HUB (ICH)
The GMCH and The ICH communicate over a dedicated hub interface which communicates
at a speed of 266 MB/s compared to a normal chipset in which the north and the south
bridge communicate over the PCI bus, which has a maximum speed of 133MB/s.
Some of the characteristics of the GMCH include:
Processor \Host bus support
Optimized for the Pentium II, Pentium III, and Celeron Processors
Support Socket 370 and Slot 1
Supports 32 bit System bus addressing
Supports Uni-processor systems only 66/100 MHz bus
Integrated DRAM Controller
Supports up to 512 MB using 128 MB Technology
Supports up to 2 Double-sided DIMMS
64 Bit Data Interface
100 MHz Data Bus
Integrated Graphics Controller
3D Hyper Pipelined Architecture
Full 2d HW Acceleration
Motion Video Acceleration
3D Graphics Visual Enhancements
3D Texturing Enhancements
Support for 85MHz Flat Panel Monitor
Integrated 24 bit 230 MHz RAMDAC
Characteristics of the ICH include:
PCI Rev 2.2 compliant with support for 33 MHz PCI operations
Power Management Logic Support
Enhanced DMA Controller, Interrupt Controller & Timer Functions
Integrated IDE controller; ICH0 supports Ultra ATA/33; ICH also supports Ultra ATA/66
USB host interface with support for 2 USB ports
