PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND ADJUSTMENT
7. Push the wheel forward, and then
remove the drive chain from the
rear sprocket.
TIP
The drive chain does not need to be
disassembled in order to remove and
install the rear wheel.
8. Remove the axle nut.
9. Pull the wheel axle out, and then
remove the wheel.
To install the rear wheel
1. Install the drive chain onto the rear
sprocket, and then install the
wheel by inserting the wheel axle
from the right-hand side.

2. Install the brake rod into the brake
camshaft lever, and then install the
brake pedal free play adjusting nut
onto the brake rod.
3. Connect the brake torque rod to
the brake shoe plate by installing
the bolt and nut.
4. Install the axle nut.
5. Lower the rear wheel so that it is
on the ground, and then put the
sidestand down.
6. Tighten the brake torque rod nut to
the specified torque.
Tightening torque:
Brake torque rod nut:
23 Nm (2.3 m·kgf, 17 ft·lbf)
7. Adjust the drive chain slack. (See
page 7-23.)
8. Tighten the locknuts, and then
tighten the axle nut to the specified
torques.

Tightening torques:
Drive chain puller locknut:
16 Nm (1.6 m·kgf, 12 ft·lbf)
Axle nut:
105 Nm (10.5 m·kgf, 76 ft·lbf)
9. Insert a new cotter pin into the axle
nut, and then bend its ends as
shown. WARNING! Always use a
new cotter pin for the axle nut.

TIP
Make sure that two notches in the axle
nut are aligned with the hole through
the wheel axle, otherwise further tight-
en the axle nut until they are.
10. Adjust the brake pedal free play.
(See page 7-20.)
WARNING
After adjusting the brake pedal free
play, check the operation of the
brake light.
