Procedures

Preparing for Maintenance

1. Move the machine to a level surface.
2. Stop the engine and wait for all moving parts to stop.
3. Disconnect the wire from the spark plug, and secure
the wire so it cannot come in contact with the spark
plug (Figure 19).

WARNING
Tipping the machine may cause the fuel to leak
from the carburetor or the fuel tank. Gasoline
is extremely flammable, highly explosive, and,
under certain conditions, can cause personal
injury or property damage.
Avoid fuel spills by draining the gasoline to an
acceptable level with the fuel valve; never siphon.
4. If you must tip the machine and there is fuel
in the fuel tank, empty the fuel tank; refer to
Emptying the Fuel Tank (page 21).
Note: If possible, wait to perform maintenance
until the fuel tank is nearly empty from running the
machine during normal operation.

Lubrication

Lubricating the Pivot Arms

Service Interval: Every 50 hours
Yearly or before storage
1. Refer to Preparing for Maintenance (page 17).
2. Move the rear cutting-height levers to the center
setting.
3. Drain the gasoline from the fuel tank; refer to
Emptying the Fuel Tank (page 21).
4. Tip the machine onto its right side with the air filter
up.
5. Wipe the grease fittings with a clean rag (Figure 20).
Note: The grease fittings are located near the rear
wheels.
6. Attach a grease gun nozzle onto each fitting and
gently apply 2 or 3 pumps of #2 multi-purpose
lithium-based grease.
Important: Excessive grease pressure may
damage the seals.
7. Return the machine to its operating position.
8. Connect the wire to the spark plug.

Lubricating the Gear Case

Service Interval: Every 50 hours
1. Install a grease gun onto the fitting located under
the fuel tank (Figure 21).
