Setting up network connections
IMPORTANT
•
If you have already set up wireless LAN connections, set up network connections with
care so that they will not conflict with the wireless LAN connections already set up. A
conflict between a wireless LAN connection and a wired LAN connection prevents your
computer to carry out communications over your LAN.
•
When you are connected to a network (such as the Internet), do not place your compu-
ter into standby or hibernation mode, otherwise your computer may not maintain con-
nection with the network.
Whenever your computer is not in use, it should be turned off.
•
If you disconnected the LAN cable after placing your computer into hibernation mode
while leaving it connected to the LAN, be sure to connect the AC adapter to your com-
puter before resuming operation. Failure to do so may cause your computer to malfunc-
tion.

By default, your computer is configured so that turning on your computer will not auto-
matically make the wired LAN features ready for use, except when a LAN cable and the
AC adapter is connected to it. To make the wired LAN features ready for use, shut down
your computer, connect a LAN cable and the AC adapter to it, and then turn your com-
puter back on.

If you want to keep the wired LAN features always ready for use, modify the settings of
BIOS Setup.
•
When you want to connect to an existing network, ask the network administrator what
and how you should set up.
•
If you want to use an ADSL to connect to the Internet through your network, set up your
computer for network connections, following the instructions from your ISP (Internet
service provider) or communications line provider.
Critical Points
By default, your computer is configured so that it will check whether a LAN cable is connected
or not, each time you turn it on or restart it when it is powered from its internal battery.
If no LAN cable is connected at that time, the built-in LAN device will be disabled for energy
saving.
Whenever you want to use the built-in LAN device, connect a LAN cable or the AC adapter
to your computer before turning on or restarting your computer.
If you want to keep the built-in LAN device always ready for use, disable the energy-saving
features by modifying the settings of BIOS Setup.

When disconnecting the LAN cable from your computer, pull out the connector while holding
down the stopper on it, otherwise the connector could be broken.

When connecting to a LAN, you should power your computer from the AC adapter whenever
possible, since data transfer over a network requires a large amount of electrical power.
