    Removing the Shipping Tape Remove the tape holding the front cover in place. Front Cover Remove the tape holding the MP (Multi MP Tray Purpose) tray in place. Remove the shipping tape holding the paper cassettes in place. Paper Cassettes Remove the shipping tape holding the left cover in place.

    3 Positioning the Printer Make sure that the printer location meets the following requirements: Clearance Be sure to provide enough space Rear: 10 cm (3 - ") around the printer. Prolonged use without sufficient clearance may cause heat to build up inside the printer, resulting in fire.

    4 Installing the Toner Container Before using the printer for the first time, you must prepare it by installing the toner con- tainer, waste toner box, and set up the computer interface. Open the printer front cover all the way. Front Cover Take out the toner container.
  • Page 8 Grasp the handle on the toner container and insert the toner container along the rail inside the printer. Be sure that the gear side of the toner container faces the printer. Gear Side To the Printer Hold the toner container using both hands and fully insert it into the printer.

    5 Installing the Waste Toner Box A waste toner box is supplied with the printer. Install the waste toner box as shown in the figure. Close the front cover. 6 Connecting the Printer to the Computer The printer can be connected to the computer in a number of ways: through the parallel interface connector, through the USB (Universal Serial Bus) interface connector, or through the network interface connector.

    8 Loading Paper in the Paper Cassettes and MP (Multi-Purpose) Tray The paper cassette can accommodate A5 to A3/Ledger size paper and can hold approxi- mately 500 sheets. The MP tray can accommodate various paper sizes and can hold approx- imately 200 sheets of paper.

Paper Cassette Press the lever (green-colored) on the front side paper guide and slide the paper guides to the desired position. Turn the paper stopper (located on the right side of the paper cassette) to the left as shown and move it to the desired paper size.

    9 Turning the Power Switch On This section describes the procedure for turning on the printer’s power. During start-up, select the language for message display and status page. Select from English, German, French, Italian, Dutch, Spanish, or Portuguese. The default message language is English. To change the message languages, refer to the sec- Selecting a Message Language .

    10 Printing a Status Page To perform a printer test, print a status page indicating factory settings. Press the MENU key on the operator panel. Press the key repeatedly until the message display shows Print Sta- tus Page. Press the ENTER key twice. The message display indicates Processing while printing the status page, then returns to Ready.

    Correcting a Paper Jam If a paper jam occurs while printing, remove the jammed paper as described below. After removing the jammed paper, open and close the front cover. When removing jammed paper, pull it out carefully so as not to tear it. Torn pieces of paper are difficult to remove and may be hand to find.
