Shifting
The
transmission
lets
you
control
the
amount
of
power
you have
available
at
a
given
speed
for starting,
accelerating,
climbing
hills,
etc.
The
use
of
the
shift
pedai
is
shown
in
the
illustration.
To
shift
into neutral,
depress
the
shift
pedal repeatedly
until
it
reaches
the
end
of
its
travel,
then
raise
the pedal
slightly.
1.
Do
not coast
for
long periods
with the
engine
off,
and
do
not
tow
the motorcycle a long
dis-
tance.
Even
with
gears
in
neu-
tral,
the transmission
is
only
properly
lubricated
when
the
engine
is
running.
Inadequate
lubrication
may damage
the
transmission.
2.
Always use
the clutch
when
changing
gears.
The
engine,
transmission,
and
driveline
are
not
designed
to
withstand the
shock
of
forced
shifting
and
can be
damaged
by
shifting
without using the
clutch.

To
start
out
and
accelerate:
1
Pull
the
clutch lever to
disengage
the
clutch.
2.
Shift into
first
gear.
The
neutral
in-
dicator
light
should
go
out.
3.
Open
the
throttle
gradually,
and
at
the
same
time,
release the
clutch
lever slowly.
4.
At the
recommended
shift
point
in
the table
on page
5-6,
close the
throttle,
and
at
the
same
time,
quickly
pull
in
the
clutch
lever.
5.
Shift into
second
gear.
(Be
careful
not
to
shift
into neutral.)
6.
Open
the
throttle
part
way
and
gradually release the
clutch
lever.
7.
Follow the
same
procedure
when
shifting to
the next higher
gear.
Always
shift
gears
at
the
recom-
mended
shift
points.
