Antenna Considerations

Due to the complexity of 8PSK DVB S2 modulation and a satellite symbol rate of 30 MSps, the choice of an
antenna size for your location can be important. As shown in the diagram below, a 4.5 meter diameter antenna
is recommended to reliably receive the Discovery services over a significant portion of the continental United
States.
3.7 m = 12 ft. 2 in.
4.5 m = 14 ft. 9 in.
In addition to an appropriate antenna diameter, we strongly recommend that PLL LNBs be installed for Galaxy
13. The PLL LNBs have a local oscillator stability of +/- 125 kHz or less. Less stable
(higher +/- kHz value) DRO LNBs that work for QPSK modulation (typically 26-
48 Mbps) may not produce satisfactory results with 8PSK DVB S2 modulation.
These less stable LNBs may even have labels that identify them as "digital" or
"digital ready" LNBs, but such labels are products of an earlier time, when 8PSK
DVB S2 modulation (and its higher data rates) did not exist. If signal acquisition is
problematic or marginal, then we recommend an upgrade to PLL LNBs.
Provided the DSR-6402 is properly grounded and the shield of the coaxial cable
is earthed in accordance with Article 820.93 of the NEC, ANSI/NFPA 70:2005 or equivalent, the output of the
PLL LNB can be connected to any of the eight RF inputs as seen in the rear connector panel diagram, below.
For the Discovery services, however, connect as described on page 1..
Note: LNB power can be activated for Port 1,
and Port 1 can be added to a one-port power-
passing splitter to power one LNB.
