A type of wire that consists of a center wire surrounded by insulation and then a grounded
shield of braided wire. The shield minimizes electrical and radio frequency interference.
The coaxial cable is the primary type of cabling used by the cable television industry and is
also widely used for computer networks.
The Data-Over-Cable Service Interface Specifications defines interface standards for cable
modems and supporting equipment.
An opening in a computer where a circuit board can be inserted to add new capabilities to
the computer. Expansion slots for PCs come in half- and full-size. Half-size slots are also
called 8-bit slots, and full-size slots are called 16-bit slots. PCI expansions slots are always
full-size and connect directly to the PCI bus.
A connector used in the cable television industry that connects coaxial cable to equipment.
An identifier for a computer or device on a TCP/IP network. Networks using the TCP/IP
protocol route messages based on the IP address of the destination.
Media Access Control address. A hardware address that uniquely identifies each node of a
network. The MAC address is used to forward information through a network to its final
destination.
