Brake system description

The RZT-S Zero has an electric hub motor that drives a drop axle at each rear wheel. The RZT-S Zero uses
regenerative braking to stop or slow the mower. Regenerative braking is when the power is removed from the motor.
As the motor continues to spin, it will generate power. That power is sent to the batteries to help recharge them.
Charging the batteries will load down the motors enough to slow or stop the mower similar to the way a hydro pump
will slow down a hydrostatic drive system.
The RZT-S Zero also has a mechanical brake that is primarily used as a parking brake, but can be used as an
emergency brake in case the regenerative braking fails.
NOTE: Regenerative braking happens electrically and there are no parts to service. This chapter will only look
at the mechanical braking system.

Brakes and Drive System
• There is a brake for each drop axle.
• They are activated by depressing the brake pedal.
• The parking brake lever latches the brake shaft.
• The brake shaft has three bell cranks. The two
outer bell cranks are for applying the brakes. They
are connected to the brake caliper cam arms by
extension springs. See Figure 3.1.
• When the cam arms are pulled forward, they push
on the brake pins with a cam action applying pres-
sure to the brake pads. See Figure 3.2.
