of 68 °F (20 °C). No tempera-
ture compensation takes place in
the air pressure testers at filling
stations, i.e. the measured tire in-
flation pressure is dependent on
the tire temperature. As a result,
the values displayed there do
not match the values shown in
the multifunction display in most
cases.
Adjusting inflation
pressure
Compare the TPC/RDC value in
the multifunction display with the
value on the back cover of the
Rider's Manual. The difference
between the two values must be
compensated with the air pres-
sure tester at the filling station.
Example: according to the
Rider's Manual, the tire inflation
pressure is to be 36.3 psi
(2.5 bar), however 33.4 psi
(2.3 bar) is shown in the
multifunction display. This means
the tires are underinflated by
2.9 psi (0.2 bar). The tester
at the filling station indicates
34.8 psi (2.4 bar). This value
must be increased by 2.9 psi
(0.2 bar) to 37.7 psi (2.6 bar) in
order to produce the correct tire
inflation pressure.

justment (ESA)
Adjusting spring preload
To ensure fast adjustment at
temperatures below 32 °F (0 °C),
BMW Motorrad recommends not
having a passenger climb onto
the motorcycle until after the ad-
justment to two-up operation is
completed.
The ESA display flashes until the
adjustment process has been
completed. The motorcycle may
not be driven during the adjust-
ment process.
Offroad settings
The Enduro ESA developed es-
pecially for the R 1200 GS con-
tains both the onroad modes
familiar from other BMW mod-
els and special offroad modes
enabled by a special electro-hy-
draulic spring base adjustment of
the front suspension strut. The
convenient chassis adjustment to
a broad range of road conditions
increases the suitability for both
touring and offroad riding.
In this mode the spring
preload of the front suspen-
sion strut is increased to approx-
imately 50 %. The rear spring
base then assumes the same
position. This adjustment is suit-
able, for example, for offroad rid-
