The insert has a built in cleanout to be able to vacuum the buildup that accumulates in the vent system from the front of the unit without having to pull the unit from the fireplace.

Normal operation of your St. Croix Insert will produce a light build- up on the glass that wipes off with a dry paper towel. However extended burning on the low setting only will produce a tan color.
