    Hearing/Ear Protection ECHO recommends wearing hearing protection whenever unit is used. Breathing Protection Operators who are sensitive to dust or other common airborne allergens may need to wear a dust mask to prevent inhaling these materials while operating unit.

    The 50 or 300 hour emission compliance period is the time span selected by the manufacturer certifying the engine emissions output meets applicable emissions regulations, provided that approved maintenance procedures are followed as listed in the Maintenance Section of this manual.     Locate the safety decal(s) on your unit. Make sure the decal(s) is legible and that you understand and follow the instructions on it. If a decal cannot be read, a new one can be ordered from your ECHO dealer. See PARTS ORDERING instructions for specific information.

    The ECHO product you purchased has been factory pre-assembled for your convenience. Due to packaging restrictions, shield installation and other assembly may be necessary. After opening the carton, check for damage. Immediately notify your retailer or ECHO Dealer of damaged or missing parts. Use the contents list to check for missing parts.

    1. Make sure plastic debris shield (H) is properly aligned, and upper plate (A) is installed on splined PTO shaft (F). 2. Align hole in upper plate (A) with notch in gear housing (B), and insert locking tool (G) to prevent splined shaft from turning. X7502310910 © 3/2015 ECHO Inc.

    2 - 5 mm lock washers, (bracket to shield). 2 - 5 mm nuts, 2 - 5 mm lock washers (bracket to gear housing). 1. If installed remove nylon line head, upper fixing plate, shield plate, and plastic shield. X7502310910 © 3/2015 ECHO Inc.

    4. Check throttle for freedom of movement and that wide open throttle / low idle extremes are adjusted properly. If adjustment cannot be achieved with adjusting nuts (B), consult with your Echo Dealer for correct adjustment procedure. Tighten nuts (B). X7502310910...

    50-75 mm (2-3 in.) from the ground. 4. Tighten harness clamp screw. 5. Loosen upper U-Handle clamp screws (B), and position U-Handle for comfortable operation. 6. Tighten U-Handle clamp screws and 8 mm clamp hex bolt securely. X7502310910 © 3/2015 ECHO Inc.

    • Brush cutters over 7.5 kg (16.5 lbs) dry weight (weight w/o fuel) require a double shoulder harness. Note: The Barrier Bar is used to restrict rearward movement of the unit.     During blade operation, the same fatigue reduction is achieved. Safety to the operator is also enhanced by reducing the possibility of blade contact with the operator's hands and feet by restricting trimmer movement. X7502310910 © 3/2015 ECHO Inc.

    Diesel fuels and alternative fuels, such as E-15 (15% ethanol), E-85 (85% ethanol) or any fuels not meeting ECHO requirements are NOT approved for use in ECHO 2-stroke gasoline engines. Use of diesel or alternative fuels may cause performance problems, loss of power, overheating, fuel vapor lock, and unintended machine operation, including, but not limited to, improper clutch engagement.

    5 pulls, repeat instructions 2 - 5. 6. Throttle Trigger After engine warm-up, grip throttle handle and support handle. Depress the throttle trigger lockout, and gradually depress throttle trigger to increase engine RPM to operating speed. X7502310910 © 3/2015 ECHO Inc.

    Move stop switch button (A) backward to STOP position. If engine does not stop when stop switch is moved to STOP position, close choke - COLD START position - to stall engine. Have your ECHO dealer repair stop switch before using unit again. X7502310910 © 3/2015 ECHO Inc.

    If you are unsure or are not equipped with the necessary tools, you may want to take your unit to an ECHO Service Dealer for maintenance. To help you decide whether you want to DO-IT-YOURSELF or have the ECHO Dealer do it, each maintenance task has been graded.

    5. Place foam pre-filter over raised center and inside outer lip of air filter. Install air filter in air filter case. 6. Install air filter retainer on post in air filter cover, flat side up. 7. Install air filter cover and tighten cover knob securely. X7502310910 © 3/2015 ECHO Inc.

    2. Clean the plug or replace with a new one. DO NOT sand blast to clean. Remaining sand will damage engine. 3. Adjust spark plug gap by bending outer electrode. 4. Tighten spark plug to 150-170 kgf • cm (130-150 in • lbf). X7502310910 © 3/2015 ECHO Inc.

    DO NOT use a metal scraper to remove dirt from the cylinder fins. 5. Use brush to remove dirt from the cylinder fins. 6. Remove grass and leaves from the grid between the recoil starter and fuel tank. 7. Assemble components in reverse order. X7502310910 © 3/2015 ECHO Inc.

    6. Tighten muffler mounting bolts (or nuts) to 60-80 kgf•cm (53-70 in•lbf). 7. Install muffler cover and attach spark plug lead. 8. Start engine, and warm to operating temperature. 9. Stop engine, and re-tighten mounting bolts (or nuts) to specifications. X7502310910 © 3/2015 ECHO Inc.

    This engine has been factory adjusted to maintain satisfactory starting, emission, and durability performance up to 1,100 feet above sea level (ASL) (96.0 kPa). To maintain proper engine operation and emission compliance above 1,100 feet ASL the carburetor may need to be adjusted by an authorized ECHO service dealer.

    SRM-280U MAINTENANCE Sharpening Metal Blades Three styles of metal blades are approved for use on the ECHO Brush Cutter. The 8-tooth blade can be sharpened during normal maintenance. The clearing blade and 80 tooth blade require professional service. Before sharpening, CLOSELY inspect blade for cracks (look at the bottom of each tooth and the center mounting hole closely), missing teeth and bending.

    Spark Plug NGK BPMR-8Y (Gap 0.65 mm (0.026 in.) Fuel Mixed (Gasoline and Two-stroke Oil) 50 : 1 Power Blend X or ECHO Red Armor ® ISO-L-EGD (ISO/CD 13738) and J.A.S.O. Fuel/Oil Ratio M345- FD, two-stroke, air-cooled engine oil. Use 89 Octane unleaded. Do not use fuel containing methyl alcohol, more than 10% ethyl Gasoline alcohol or 15% MTBE.

    Any misuse from contact with concrete, rocks, or other structures is not covered by this warranty. • ECHO’s Rapid Loader String Head carries a lifetime warranty on the line locking system, parts only; no labor. Refer to your operator’s manual for string head installation and maintenance instructions.
