This glossary includes terms for the IBM
Enterprise Storage Server(ESS) and other
Seascape solution products.
This glossary includes selected terms and
definitions from:
v The American National Standard Dictionary for
Information Systems , ANSI X3.172–1990,

Standards Institute (ANSI). Copies may be

AAS. See Advanced Administrative Systems .
access. (1) To obtain the use of a computer resource.
(2) In computer security, a specific type of interaction
between a subject and an object that results in flow of
information from one to the other.
Advanced Adminstrative Systems (AAS). A system
used by IBM for order entry for machines and external
cables either by a regular order or by an MES.
alert. (1) A message or log that a storage facility
generates as the result of error event collection and
analysis. An alert indicates that you need to perform
some service action. (2)

allegiance. In the ESA/390 architecture, a relationship
that is created between a device and one or more
channel paths during the processing of certain
conditions. Refer to implicit allegiance, contingent
allegiance, and reserved allegiance.
allocated storage. On an IBM storage server, the
space allocated to volumes, but not yet assigned. See
assigned storage .
American National Standard Code for Information
Interchange (ASCII). The standard code, using a
coded character set consisting of 7-bit coded characters
(8 bits including parity check), that is used for
information interchange among data processing
systems, data communication systems, and associated
equipment. The ASCII set consists of control characters
and graphic characters. (A)
American National Standards Institute (ANSI). An
organization consisting of producers, consumers, and
general interest groups, that establishes the procedures
by which accredited organizations create and maintain
voluntary industry standards in the United States. (A)
ANSI. See American National Standards Institute .
APAR. See authorized program analysis report .
arbitrated loop. For fibre-channel connection,
arbitrated loop is a topology that allows you to
interconnect a set of nodes.
array. An ordered collection, or group, of physical
devices (disk drive modules) that are used to define
logical volumes or devices.
ASCII. See American National Standard Code for
Information Interchange (ASCII) .
assigned storage. On an IBM storage server, the
space allocated to a volume and assigned to a port.
authorized program analysis report (APAR). A
report of a problem caused by a suspected defect in a
current, unaltered release of a program.
availability. The degree to which a system or resource
is capable of performing its normal function. Also see
data availability .
B
bay. Physical space on an IBM Enterprise Storage
server. A bay contains SCSI and ESCON host adapter
cards. See service boundary .
bit. Either of the digits 0 or 1 when used in the binary
numeration system. (T)
