Recommendations:
1. Your choice. I happen to like them. However, note that
I've never found a Nikon viewfinder with them to be
100% perfectly aligned. Often the lines are a fraction of a
degree off from absolute horizontal and vertical.
2. For some reason, Nikon has also chosen to put the grid
lines at one-quarter points rather than the one-third points
that many compose with. Moreover, they don't
correspond to any other useful framing position, either.
However, if you imagine a line between the outer left and
right edges and the first vertical grid line in the viewfinder,
you'll have the approximate position of a standard 8x10"
crop:
The actual position of the 8x10 crop markings would be
somewhere between the halfway point I suggest and the
outer edge of the autofocus sensor area, so you could also
use the outer edge of the autofocus sensor area as a rough
guideline.

Another LCD overlay function in the viewfinder is an icon in
the lower left corner to remind you when the battery is low.
