There's nothing you have to do to enable chromatic
aberration correction on the D300; it's done automatically
when you shoot JPEG and TIFF images. If you use Capture NX
for NEF conversion, it, too, can do lateral chromatic
aberration, though in that program you can turn that
correction on and off.

Manual Focus

You can focus lenses manually on a D300. With many older
Nikkor autofocus lenses you'll need to move the Focus Mode
lever on the front of the D300 to the M (manual) position to
do so. With most AF-S lenses
focus has been initiated by the camera by simply turning the
focus ring (i.e. override autofocus). With most of Nikon's
professional lenses, the lens itself has a Manual/Autofocus
switch (or ring switch on older lenses) that can be used
When you focus manually, the D300 still provides a focus aid
that's useful: the focus indicator at the far left of the
viewfinder information display displays
correct. Regardless of the autofocus sensor chosen the
confirm focus indication can be used. This is unlike many
previous Nikons, where only the central AF sensor could be
used.
Only a couple of caveats exist for this manual focus
confirmation function:
The lens must have a maximum aperture of about f/5.6 or
faster. (In high contrast situations, sometimes you can get
by with a lens that only opens up to f/8, but don't count
on it.)

The 18-55mm and 55-200mm DX lenses don't allow manual focus override, even
though they are AF-S lenses.

This switch is (somewhat confusingly) labeled M/A for the autofocus position, M for
the manual focus position on AF-S lenses. The "M/A" is trying to tell you that the lens
will autofocus but you can override it with manual focus at any time by turning the
focus ring. If an AF-S lens has instead only A and M settings instead of M/A and M
settings, then it can't be manually overridden for focus.
