Even if you change the battery pack while the terminal is turned off, the
terminal resumes or boots the next time the terminal is turned on.
The keypad does not have a physical key for every character and function
available. You use the modifier keys to access characters or perform
functions that do not have a physical key on the keypad:
• On the 39-key and 57-key keypads, you use Function Left (l),
Function Right (r), Control (c), and Shift (w).
• On the 48-key keypad, you use Function Left (the orange > key),
Function Right (the green > key), and Shift (^).
On all three keypads, you also use the Shift key to type uppercase
alphabetic characters.
When you press a modifier key, the key is held in a buffer until you press
another key. If the status icons are enabled, the Modifier Key status icon
on the right side of the terminal's screen turns on to remind you that the
key is being held in the buffer. When you press another key, the key
combination is entered into the terminal. The Modifier Key status icon
turns off unless the second key that you pressed is another modifier key
that is different from the first one that you pressed. For help using the
status icons, see the procedure in "Learning About the Status Icons" on
page 21.
To flush the modifier key from the buffer without performing any action,
just press the key again. The Modifier Key status icon turns off.
To use the Function Left, Function Right, Control, and Shift keys
1 Press a modifier key, such as w or ^. The Modifier Key status icon
turns on.
2 Press the second key. The Modifier Key status icon turns off.
For example, to type the Euro symbol (€) on a 39-key keypad, press r.
The Modifier Key status icon turns on. Press 0. The Modifier Key
status icon turns off, and a Euro symbol appears on the screen.
To type all alphabetic characters as uppercase letters, you can:
• press w or ^ before every letter you type.
• use the Keypad Caps Lock configuration command. For help, see
"Keypad Caps Lock" in Chapter 6 of the 2400 Family system manual.
• enable the Caps Lock feature. For help, continue with the next two
sections.
