Note: Wait for all moving parts to stop and remove
spark plug wire before servicing, cleaning, or making
any adjustments to the unit.
Adjusting the Self-Propel
Drive
Note: Improper adjustment can cause transmission
failure.
1. If the lawn mower does not self-propel or has a
tendency to creep forward when the control bar
is released, adjust the transmission cable on the
deck.
2. If the lawn mower does not self propel, rotate
the transmission cable nuts clockwise 1/2 turn
to tighten the belt.
3. If the lawn mower creeps forward, rotate the
transmission cable nuts 1/2 turn counterclockwise
to loosen the belt.
4. If the lawnmower does not drive up slopes, you
may need to increase belt tension. Repeat step 2.

Adjusting the Blade Brake
Cable
Adjustment should only be necessary when a new
blade brake cable assembly is installed, new blade
drive belt is installed, and/or the cut quality is
diminishing.
1. Stop the engine and wait for all moving parts to
stop.
2. Disconnect the wire from the spark plug.
3. Remove belt cover.
4. Loosen the blade brake cable nuts until the cable
conduit slides (Figure 25).

5. Check the adjustment by activating the BBC. The
distance between the notch in the idler arm and
the blade brake cable conduit is 4 1/2 inches (11.4
cm) (see Figure 26).

6. If the measurement is other than 4 1/2 inches
(11.4 cm), adjust the front or rear cable nuts
accordingly.
7. Tighten the blade brake cable nut to lock the
adjustment in place.
8. Release the BBC; the spring must be loose. If not,
contact an Authorized Service Dealer.
9. Re-install the belt cover.
10. Connect the wire to the spark plug.
