Subnet Mask. An IP address that determines how an IP
address is divided into network and host portions ac-
cording to the bits.
System Controller Card. A single slot Compact PCI
board which provides the central management func-
tionality for the Tenor CMS unit.
T1 WAN Card. A board inserted into the Tenor CMS to
provide access to the network via T1 lines.
Tenor CMS. A Multi-Path gateway which digitizes
voice/fax/modem data and transmits it over the IP
through an Ethernet LAN, bypassing the public net-
work.
TCP/IP. Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Proto-
col. TCP/IP is a standard communications protocol
divided into seven layers of activity. Each layer de-
fines a different aspect of how two devices should
talk to each other (i.e., when a network device should
send/receive data). For example, layer one is the
physical means of communications (e.g., modem),
whereas layer 3 is the network type (e.g, Internet).
For TCP/IP, it is a combination of two layers of com-
munication protocol. TCP (layer 4) does the actual
transport of data; IP (layer 3) sets the rules for mov-
ing the data from one end of the network to another.
TCP/IP uses an IP address to identify a location for
specific network devices.
Transition Module. The RJ-48 ports on the rear of the E1,
T1 or DS1 card used for connectivity to the network.
Trunk Group. A collection of T1 or E1 channels used to
connect the Tenor CMS to the network or another
piece of equipment.

WAN. Wide Area Network. A number of LANs connect-
ed together through a long distance communications
medium. For example, your company may have a
LAN in New York, a LAN in Tokyo, and a LAN in
Los Angeles. When these sites connect together over
the data network or the public network, it is consid-
ered a WAN. As a result, intra-corporate information
is passed through the data network from one LAN to
another LAN site in a remote location.
WAN cards. Boards inserted in the chassis front slots
(E1, T1 or DS1) to provide intelligent processing for
accessing the network via T1 or E1 spans and con-
necting to boards inserted in the rear of the chassis.

Zone. A group of endpoints (e.g, gateways, terminals,
etc.) in one corporate site.
