1. Removethespark plug bootand use a sparkplug wrenchto
removethe plug.See Figure17.
2. Visuallyinspectthe spark plug.Discardthe spark plug if thereis
apparentwear,or if the insulatoris crackedor chipped.Cleanthe
sparkplug with a wirebrush if it is to be reused.
3. Measurethe plug gap with a feelergauge.Correctas necessary
by bendingsideelectrode.See Figure18.The gap shouldbe set
to 0.030in.
4. Checkthatthe sparkplug washeris in good conditionand thread
the sparkplug in by handto preventcrossthreading.
5. After thespark plug is seated,tightenwith a spark plugwrenchto
compressthe washer.
NOTE:Wheninstallinga newspark plug,tighten 1/2turn after the
sparkplug seatsto compressthe washer.Whenreinstalling a used
sparkplug,tighten 1/8-1/4 turnafter the spark plug seatsto compress
the washer.
Neverusegasolineor low flash pointsolventsfor cleaningthe air

Servicing the Air Cleaner
Theair cleanerpreventsdamagingdirt, dust,etc.,from enteringthe
carburetor and beingforced intothe engineand is important to engine
life and performance. N everrun the enginewithoutan air cleaner
completelyassembled.Checkthe air cleanerbeforeeach use.
Paperfilterscannotbe cleanedand mustbe replacedonce a year
or every 100operatinghours;moreoften if usedin extremelydusty
conditions.
1. Pressthe tab on the air filter cover,lift the coverand removethe
air filter.See Figure19.
2. Discardold air filter.
3. Installnewair filter.
4. Closethe cover.
NOTE:If the filter is torn or damagedin anyway,replaceit.
Donot sprayenginewith waterto clean becausewatercould
contaminate fuel. Usinga garden hoseor pressurewashingequip-
ment canalso forcewater intothe muffleropening.Waterthat passes
throughthe mufflercanenterthe cylinder,causingdamage.
Accumulation of debrisaroundmufflercouldcause a fire. Inspectand
cleanbeforeevery use.
