Remote Control Functions
IMPORTANTNOTE: T heAVR220's remote
may be programmed to control up to eight
devices, i ncludingthe AVR220. Beforeusing the
remote,it is importantto rememberto pressthe
Input Selector Button O
that corresponds
to the unityou wish to operate.In addition,the
AVR220's remoteisshippedfrom the factoryto
operatethe AVR220 andmost HarmanKardon
CDor DVDplayersandcassette d ecks.The
remoteis also capableof operatinga wide vari-
ety of otherproductsusingthe control codes
that are part of the remote.Beforeusingthe
remotewith otherproducts, f ollow the instruc-
tions on pages33-36 to programthe proper
codesfor the productsin yoursystem.
It is alsoimportantto rememberthat manyof
the buttonson the remotetake on different
functions,dependingon the productselected
usingthe DeviceControlSelectors. Thedescrip-
tions shown hereprimarilydetail the functions
of the remotewhen it is usedto operatethe
AVR220. (Seepage34 for informationabout
alternatefunctionsfor the remote'sbuttons.)

Power Off Button: Pressing t his button
turnsoff (places inthe Standbymode)the device
that waslastselected bypressing oneof the
Input Selectorsq_l. Toplacethe AVR220 in
the Standby mode,first pressthe AVRSelector
Button _
andthen pressthis button.
IR Transmitter Window: Pointthis win-
dow towardsthe AVR220 when pressing buttons
on the remoteto makecertain that infraredcom-
mandsare properly received.
Program/SPLIndicator:Thisthree-color
indicatoris usedto guideyou through the
process of programmingthe remoteand it is
alsousedasa levelindicatorwhen usingthe
remote'sEzSet c apabilities. ( Seepage 21 for
moreinformationon settingoutput levels,and
seepage 33 for informationon programming
the remote.)

Power On Button: Press thisbutton
to turn on powerto the devicethat waslast
selected bypressing oneof the Input Selectors
_.
Toturn on the AVR220,pressthe AVR
SelectorButton O.
Input Selectors: Pressing oneof these
buttonswill performthreeactionsat the same
time. First,if the AVR220 is not turnedon, this
will power up the unit. Next, it will selectthe
sourceshown on the button asthe inputto the
AVR220. Finally,it will changethe remotecon-
trol so that it controlsthe deviceselected.After
pressingone of these buttonsyou must press
the AVR Selector Button _
againto oper-
ate the AVR220's functionswith the remote.
AVR Selector: Pressing thisbuttonwill
switchthe remotesothat it will operatethe
AVR220'sfunctions. I f the AVR220 is inthe
Standbymode,it will alsoturn the AVR220on.
qi_ AM/FM TunerSelect: Press this button to
selectthe AVR220's tuner asthe listening
choice.Pressing this button when the tuner is
alreadyin usewill switchbetweenthe AM and
FMbands.
TestButton: Press this buttonto begin
the sequence usedto calibratethe AVR220's
output levels. ( Seepage21 for moreinformation
on calibratingthe AVR220.)
Sleep Button: Pressthis button to place
the unit in the Sleepmode.After the time
shown in the display,the AVR220 will auto-
maticallygo into the Standbymode.Eachpress
of the button changesthe time until turn-off in
the following order:

Mode Selector: Pressthis
button to begin the process of changing
the surround mode. After the button has
been pressed, use the AIr
Buttons

to selectthe desiredsurroundmode.

the TV is selectedusingthe device Input

This button is also usedin part
of the processof erasestoredmacrocom-

Channel+ and - keyswhen the remoteis pro-
grammedfor usewith TVs,cable boxes, V CRs,
satellite receivers or other video deviceswith

Punch-Through c apabilityso that you may
changechannelson a separatedevicewhen
the remoteis in AVRmode.
Night Mode: Press this button to activate
the Night mode.Thismode is availablein spe-
cially encodeddigital sources,andit preserves
dialog (centerchannel)intelligibilityat low
volumelevels.
Channel Select Button:Thisbuttonis
usedto startthe process of settingthe AVR220's
outputlevelsto an external s ource. O nce this but-
ton is pressed, usethe AIr Buttonsl[_l_
to selectthe channel b eingadjusted, t hen press
the Set Button qi_, followedbythe AIr

again,to changethe levelset-
